To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, jgreco@us.imshealth.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Hi gang, Just wanted to test out the new server. It got too hot around here in a hurry - we went right from winter to summer. I thought there was supposed to be a season called spring in there somewhere, but apparently it only lasted a few minutes. The postman rang the doorbell again this afternoon with another certified letter. The rest of my eBay refund finally arrived after a three month wait. I'd be interested to know which agency (if any) finally prompted the guy to send the amount I was owed... anyway, after my return from the bank, I went upstairs to my room to sit in front of the fan a little longer. Leading up the stairs is a window overloooking the next door neighbor's house that had a buzzing sound eminating from it as I went by. There was a very large bee in the window. Now wanting to get stung by it, I quickly grabbed a newspaper and snuck up on the unsuspecting bee. I struck swiftly and firmly through the curtains, the venetian blinds, the bee, and ultimately the entire window pane. I think I did manage to kill the bee, but I'm not completely sure. I'm afraid to check through the broken glass to find out, since if the bee is still alive, he's gonna be really irritated now :-) I guess I'll have to use some of that refund to pay for a new window pane now. This has been a test rambling, but a true story. Thanks for reading. TAYL, Ken M - what happens to the archives from the old servers now? I feel like we're losing a little bit of our history with this move. ================= To: Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] I killed a bee... If so, are you having problems? I know that both myself, and many of my colleagues on the Tigers Mailing List are having really terrible difficulties with lost links, inability to log on, unavailable broadcasts, and many other problems. MLB have basically taken away the ability for local radio stations to webcast games, instead forcing listeners to subscribe to their own site for access. Unfortunately, whoever is organising the service seems to be flying by the seat of their pants. The impression that I get is that MLB decided at a very late stage to go down this road, and have botched together an extremely poor system in the space of just a few months. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: tply@aol.com Worst-to-first Phils opening eyes By ROB MAADDI AP Sports Writer May 5, 2001 1:38 pm EST PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Larry Bowa just wanted to make the Philadelphia Phillies competitive this season after a dreadful 2000. He's done that and so much more. The Phillies, tied with the Chicago Cubs for the majors' worst record last season, are in first place in the NL East this late in the season for the first time since 1995. OK, it's only May, but after losing 97 games last year and finishing with a winning record just once since 1986, who can blame the Phillies for being excited. Philadelphia got off to a 14-6 start that included a six-game winning streak and a three-game sweep of the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies were 16-11 going into the weekend and four games ahead of the nine-time defending division champion Braves. "If they gave me the stats right now, I probably wouldn't believe it," said Bowa, hired to replace Terry Francona after last season. Bowa's surprise comes from the way the Phillies have achieved their success. They've done it with solid pitching and woeful hitting. An offense that features Bobby Abreu, Scott Rolen, Pat Burrell and Mike Lieberthal has struggled all season. No starter was batting higher than Travis Lee's .283 and no player ranked among the league leaders in any hitting category. The middle of the order - Abreu, Rolen and Lieberthal - was batting a combined .229 with nine homers and 38 RBIs. Manny Ramirez of the Boston Red Sox had nine homers and 33 RBIs all by himself. "Our pitching has been outstanding the whole year and our hitting hasn't done anything all year," Lieberthal said. "If we can come around, it'll at least give our pitchers a little leeway, and it'll make the team much better." Omar Daal, a 19-game loser last season, was named opening-day starter after an impressive spring and has responded by pitching like an ace. He is 3-0 with a 3.13 ERA and the Phillies are 5-1 when he starts. Amaury Telemaco, the No. 5 starter, also is 3-0 with a 3.31 ERA. Bruce Chen (1-1, 3.58 ERA) and Robert Person (2-3, 4.66 ERA) have pitched well. Even Randy Wolf, who struggled at the start of the season, had two straight solid outings. "Our starters, for the most part, have kept us in games," Bowa said. "That's all we can ask for." While the starters have kept them in games, the bullpen is the main reason why the Phillies have won so many games. After the relievers posted a league-worst 37 losses and 5.72 ERA last season, Philadelphia spent almost $17 million on Jose Mesa, Ricky Bottalico and Rheal Cormier. The three are proving to be worth it. Bottalico has a 1.88 ERA, Cormier hasn't allowed a run in his last six outings and Mesa converted six of his first seven save opportunities. Overall, the bullpen was 7-3 with a 3.08 ERA and eight saves. "There are so many guys down there with good arms, you want to do better than the other guy so you get an opportunity to pitch," said Wayne Gomes, who had a 1.10 ERA. "It's not competing against each other, but it's a healthy competition." The pitchers are all anxiously waiting for the offense to snap out of its slump. Rolen, who averaged 26 homers and 92 RBIs in his first four seasons, had three homers, 12 RBIs and a .202 average in his first 27 games. Abreu, a .313 career hitter, was batting .240. Lieberthal had one homer and nine RBIs and Doug Glanville finally was moved out of the leadoff spot after failing to improve his low on-base percentage. But there have been a few bright spots. Pat Burrell, coming off an excellent rookie season, raised his average to .274 despite striking out 39 times in 95 at-bats. Lee, a former hotshot prospect, has four homers in his last 12 games and has shown signs he's out of his two-year slump. "It's just a great sign that we're winning games when the offense isn't in sync," said Glanville, who drove in two runs in his first game batting in the No. 7 spot. The performance of the bench players is another reason the Phillies are winning early. Pinch hitters were batting .412 (14-for-34) with 11 RBIs. "Pitching is the key," Person said. "If we can just keep it constant, keep our team in the game, any minute now they're going to hit. The batters are going to get very hot. Once it happens, we're going to be a force." It might even get a few fans to Veterans Stadium to watch the games. The Phillies are averaging under 18,000 fans a game. But it doesn't seem to affect Bowa. "I don't care how many people come out as long as we win," he said. "It does not bother me. I don't care if there's no people in the stands. I just want to win. If they come out, fine. If they don't, there's nothing we can do. These guys are used to playing in front of small crowds." They were used to losing, too. Not anymore - at least for now.

Washington Report + Thanks To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Hi gang, I've finally gotten a chance to sit down and type a few (hundred) words about last weekend's events. Friday's trip down to Joe Greco's was uneventful and I made it there in time to catch the T-ball game Jeffrey played in. I am sure I brought good luck to the team, since they won 16-3 in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated. I'm informed that they lost the game prior to and after my attendance, therefore I rest my case ;-) A Friday night trip to Dairy Queen was made in celebration and it also allowed me to get my recommended daily allowance of food from the ice cream group. I had a busy day ahead of me tomorrow... Saturday morning came early for me and after checking my e-mail on my laptop (which I turned on the night before so it would be warmed up by the time I woke up), I headed down to the show. After a couple hours of picking through tables and not buying much, I met up with Steve Rittenberg, who handed me a box of hockey cards he found on my list, as well as a 55 All American Sammy Baugh he found for me in an auction for cheap. The hockey box was loaded with guys like Orr, Espo, etc. and did quite a bit of damage to my lists (which Steve started in the first place I might add). Steve also added a few excellent FB and baseball cards to my pile. THANKS STEVE!! Around noontime, I headed ove to the Expo's food court to partake of the tremendous selection of delicacies. (The previous sentence is dripping with sarcasm for those of you who don't know.) I sat down with George Moore, who I forced to accept a lunch on me (If I'm going down, I'm taking someone with me ) As we ate, a few other OBC'ers happened to wander over and join us: Brett Domue, Jeff Sackmann, Andy Baran, Tim (or was it Jim?) Newcomb, as well as the aforementioned Steve. A number of cards changed hands at the table and I was kicked out of OBC a few more times for playing the Dealer Scum that I am. Brett handed over a 53T Rizzuto, which crossed off the biggest remaining bio variation on my list as well as a T205 Merkle that amazingly still proved to be an upgrade (even though the one he gave me was a tipton gem). THANKS Andy Baran had already mailed me a card, which I have just now identified as a 1915 Sporting News #64 (Del Gainer) This one must be a rare proof card, since the back is blank. THANKS ANDY!! One of the bigger hits to my list came in a bizarre stroke of luck that only OBC can provide. Tim Newcombe discovered three 1960 Leaf high numbers in a dollar bin, but two of them were the same player (Fred Hopke). My wantlist was only 3 cards long for the set, but wouldn't you know who one of the three was? That's right, Fred Hopke. After learning of the incredible amount of time, effort, and capital used to obtain the card, I managed to work out a deal with Tim for it anyway. THANKS TIM!! Once again, another Ft. Washington show went by without the sighting of local OBC'er Howard Morgan. This might be attributed to the fact that George Moore showed up. This is beginning to become a bit of an OBC mystery. Here's a few facts: They're both about the same age, same height, sound similar, and have nearly identical last names... and they've never been seen in the same place at the same time - coincidence? You decide. :-) Sunday I opted not to visit the show and drive home to beat the traffic (and get some rest before work that night). I learned a couple things this week: 1) Never try to kill a bee flying in front of a 50 year old window pane and 2) always check to see if you're leaving a place with the same number of bags you came with. As I drove into Everett Sunday afternoon, I realized that I only packed one of the two bags I went to Joe's house with. The other, the one with my laptop, still sat where I left it at Joe's - the computer remained plugged in and running as if I was going to return in a few minutes - DOH! Both events carry about a $25 penalty for being stupid. I'm guessing that's about the cost of a new window pane or mailing a crummy laptop... oh well. Washington Report + Thanks to Iversen and Chow Date: Wed, 9 May 2001 19:58:47 -0500 From: "tim newcomb" Had another good visit with OBC buddies at Fort Washington. George Moore, Steve Rittenberg, Jeff Sackmann, Brett Domue, and the Crdcllctr were all happily in evidence. Steve gave me a variety pack of 1952s and 1958s, and a 1960 Leaf high number I'd missed in the dollar bin Ken described. Brett forced on me a Tipton T206 Mathewson (!) in return for vague assurances that I'd hit his very tough wantlist sometime in the future. Ken (no scum he!) let me have two nice 1952 Bowmans, including Slaughter, for a pitifully small price (actually he didn't want to take anything, I twisted his arm). And then he bought Steve and me dinner! Keep up all that overtime, buddy-- As always, it's a fun time, to say the least. I look forward to the Also got nice cards recently from Peter Iversen and Yuk Chow-- I want to apologize to everyone. Lately I've been awfully bad about not sending cards, and even about saying thank you to people who send them to me. Things have been ridiculously hectic for me and my wife for months now. We're off to England for a month shortly, and after we return I pray things will be quieter. Then we can get to some of the really important things in life: a martini or glass of wine before dinner, cleaning out the garage, doing our 2000 taxes (oops!), and sending cards to my friends in OBC. I look forward to it fervently. Best to all-- ================= To: "'OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com'" Subject: Interesting Item on Ebay....Did Morganti write this??? Centering is 42/58 l/r & 58/42 t/b (no tilt). Corners show just a little fraying and are near square to lightly rounded. All show a hint of fuzz at the tips with the resulting wear in up to 0.025" from points. Gloss and color are outstanding, with reflecting light showing the gloss finish to have the not unusual light grainy look. The focus isn't the greatest as the color is misregistered l/r ~ 1/64" with a cyan band that wide showing at right edge of the green banner. It shows more on a team card due the small features in the team picture! Back is outstanding, very very clean, clear, bright, and the checklist is UNMARKED. Comments: Reflecting light reveals a lightning bolt surface stress wrinkle that begins at mid right edge and goes in an ever so slightly up, hard to see after about 1 1/2" in, and has fizzled out completely by the time it reaches center. It does not break surface nor affect color, but shows readily when under a light. Edges are very sharp, with magnifier revealing one tiny chip at top just left of center. This is a great looking card, with the minor wrinkle mandating VGEX, but give two huge bullets for everything else!! A good addition to a middlin' set or a super card for a "for fun" nostalgia set. HB=$10, FMV=$3.75. Winning bidder to add $0.50 S&H or SASE in the US. ================= Date: Thu, 10 May 2001 21:44:32 -0400 To: obc-ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: '54 Stahl Meyer? Has anyone else experienced the same lately? The number of card shows has trickled - even the little shows at cheap hotels are very infrequent. I never seem to win anything on ebay although I recently set a record for second place finishes on 9 individual 1951 Bowman football cards. Cards for sale that I need only seem to be available from Levi Bleam, Larry Fritsch, Kit Young etc and the prices are unattractive. The number of cards coming though OBC are certainly welcomed but also diminish as the want list diminishes. I'm not interested in many cards after about 1980 so it is hard to expand horizons that way. Obscure pre-1980 sets are just that - obscure...cheap but hard to find. Should I forget everything and start a beer can collection? George Vrechek PS I'm glad I got that off my chest and will get back to searching ebay fora 1965 O Pee Chee Tommy John card. ================= To: Subject: Anyone starting 1963 Topps? Washington, I was in Toronto for theie semi-annual show. For those of you who like hockey or OPC BB, you should really try and check this show out. It is about a 4 hour drive for me, plus luckily my sister lives 20 minutes from the convention center, so room (and oftentimes meals) are free. I first went to this show about 5 or 6 years ago and have now been to 7 or 8 of them during that time. The first time I went, I was like a kid in a candy store. I was finding so many bargains, my head was spinning. Each show was quite enjoyable, but progressively not as good as the one before it. This was due to most of the 600 (yes 600) dealers being the same and my having already raided their tables for bargains. Last May, the show was only good. I decided to still go, as it is still a great excuse to get away for a few days (it is a 3 day show) and see my sister (even though I spend 8 hours a day at the show). Last November, I had a great show again. It really invigorated me for this past weekend. Even though I was hyped for the show I was not prepared for it. I had to work Friday morning and did not start for Toronto until 1:00, thus delaying my arrival to 5:00. The show is open from 1:00 - 10:00 on Friday, 10:00 - 6:00 on Saturday & 10:00 - 5:00 on Sunday. On Friday, security finally through me out of the convention hall at 10:10. Normally I try and go through the whole room, marking down things I am interested in, location, price, condition, etc. I try not to make any major purchases until after going through the whole room, unless the deal is too good to pass up. Many of the dealers use the Beckett guide, however, I get a 50% premium for US money, so immediately I am getting things at a 1/3 off, i.e., Beckett price $9, if they charge $9 Canadian it costs me $6 US. Naturllay, I do not pay the full guide price anyways. Often trying to pay 10 -30% of book and then getting the 1/3 off in exchange. Even though I was only able to get through between 1/3 and 1/2 the show room on Friday, I was spending money like a madman. Best picks were 6 1955 Topps Doubleheaders for a combined $50 Canadian ($33 US) and a box of 1971 OPC BB. The dealer who sold me the 1971s said he had a store nearby and would try and bring in more OPC BB on Saturday. On Saturday I started with his table and he had brought in an overflowing 1500 count box. There were about 1700 cards total, including a couple hundred non-OPC BB. I told him to name a price on the whole box. This seemed to shock him, because there was no order to the box, 1965-1980 OPC BB, plus Topps BB (mainly trashed 1963s and soem 1961 Fleer BB, yes high numbers) and many star cards. Conditions ranged from ex-mt to Tipton mint. We haggled and I paid a fortune for the box. I think it was well worth it as I now have a near complete 1977 OPC BB set, many dupes, major hits to my 1967-1972 OPC BB list, 1966 OPC Morgan and other stars. I also ended up with a bunch of 1965 OPC BB dupes, including high numbers. I collect all 4 major sports and this is a great show to work on hockey. I completed my very first Parkhurst set, 1961-62, by getting Beliveau. I picked up a bunch of 1954-55 Parkhurst, including many stars and reduced that set to just 3 more (before starting on the back variations). Cut the 1972-73 OPC Hockey set in half to 2 cards, 1973-74 to 8 cards from 32, the 1964-65 Topps set to 3 from 5. I must be the only person in the world who needs more low numbers than high numbers in this set. Picked up 1 more 1961-62 Shirriff hockey coin, to reduce that to 2 more. Not to mention the still attached 1971-72 OPC hockey posters. I also picked up a bunch of nr-mt 1953 Mother's Cookies (a complete run #39-53. Must have been part of a set, but this is all I found in the guys box. These are the first ones I have, so if anyone needs a couple in that run to complete a set, LMK. These are in GORGEOUS shape. After getting the 6 1955 Topps Doubleheaders on Friday (added to the 4 I had before the show) I bought out another dealers inventory of them (24 more, including Kaline). I now have 29 of these, plus 5 dupes. Set will be added to my list and trade offers accepted. Finally, I picked up over 20 1977 Topps Cloth BB, so I guess I am now starting that set. I am stilling trying to sort everything out, checking for upgrades, etc. So no packages have gone out yet, but they will soon. Please make sure to keep your OPCC lists up to date. Lastly, I started my 1971 OPC BB set, when a local buddy gave me about 550 of them, along with some other OPC BB, and wouold not accept any payment at all. I showed him. He has 1970-1976 OPC BB, except for only a couple hundred of 1974 commons (which I gave him after the November show). I bought a complete 1974 OPC Bb set for him. I plan on getting back the couple hundred commons and will add this set to my list shortly. Anyone wanting to join me in Toronto November 9-11, 2001, for the next show,LMK. My sister will let one or two OBCers stay at the house also. I only needed about 13, so there are lots of dupes. Unfortunately for Ken, there was no #92 Martin, but the others on his list are headed his way. Brock also gets some hits, considering the paybacks I feel I owe him. Some will be held for trade for the last 6 I need: #81 83 94 99 125 Sparky 137. The ones I picked up are mainly in nice shape, I upgraded a number in my set from the stack. Would also be happy to trade them for 1953 Bowman B & W, 1948 Bowman & 1951 Topps Blue Backs. After hitting the OPCC members, there will still be lots of OPC BB to trade, especially 1977 & 1971, so if anyone else would like to join our group of North of the Border cards, let Dan know and make sure I know so I can send some of them out. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Thanks@yahoogroups.com From: Jrhatchjr@aol.com G'day all! James Moleta made his way to Boston this weekend and last night he and I met at Ken Morganti's place for an OBC style swap session. After being about 30 minutes late myself (courtesy of a 16 year old grocery store cashier with an IQ to match), I arrived at Ken's place surprised to find James not there yet. When I found out why, I wasn't surprised at all as trying to navigate through Boston is like being blindfolded while walking through a mine field. Rick Redpath was already there...in spirit anyway as he had sent an envelope to the law office of Morganti, Moleta and Hatch in absence of the real thing. James arrived shortly after me (along with Tommy), though and we started to dig in. First order of business was Rick Redpath's offering. We opened his envelope and found a dozen 1967 Topps cards with hits to each of our lists. My portion included a couple of rookie cards and the World Series Winners card, along with a 1969 Topps hit. Thank you Rick!! Throughout the night we swapped stories about some of our greatest finds (I'm still waiting for the biggie), the ones that got away and the ones we didn't care about. One nifty tidbit I wasn't aware of is that Wally Westlake has the same middle name as Bucky Dent ;-) Also fun was that we all revealed our souls and talked about our rookie card speculations of the eighties. Mike Greenwell....Kevin Maas....Hensley Meulens....Sid Fernandez...Joe Charbonneau...Sam Horn...and on and on and on. OUCH! Its been said that admission is the first step to recovery. I do feel a lot better, now. Anyone wanna Kal Daniels rookie?? Anyway, back to the old stuff. James apologized to me, saying he had left some cards for me at the hotel. No worries from me of course, but he must have felt awful about it because he gave me some hits to my list from what he had with him: a 1967 semi high, 1971 versions of McCovey and Tommy John and a 1972 Hank Aaron!! WOW! Thanks so much for the cool cards James! You can forget cards for me anytime :-) Ken got hold of my wantlists and he went through them like a hot knife through butter. For starters, he picked off four hits to my 1972 list, including a Torre and a Maury Wills IA card. Then, he ravaged my 1971 list knocking off 48 cards!!! Included in the pile were Knucksie Neikro, Jim Kaat, Gil Hodges, Red Schoendienst and 7 semi highs!! Holy cow! Thanks a bunch for the bunch of cards Ken! We lost track of time and after being an hour and a half later than planned, James and Tommy had to leave. It was a pleasure meeting James...I had a great time! But wait...there's more! After James left, Ken wanted to go through my 1970 Topps list. So, he sliced and diced his way through it, coming up with a total of 24 hits including a Bob Gibson! Unbelievable! Again, a very big thank you Ken! Then, Ken led me to his vault. As you can imagine, its quite the sight to see... almost like a baseball card shrine. I actually got to hold Ken's 1952 Topps Mantle. This was the first one I've touched and will probably be as close to having one as I'll ever get. Good thing it was in a heavy plastic holder...my sweaty hands didn't affect it any. Ken also gave me a lesson in variations: 1959 Topps "optioned statement" variations, 1968 white letter variations, and so on. I think he drew the line though when I asked him if he was going to collect the different backs in his newly started T205 set :-) What a great time! Thank you James and Ken for a fantastic night...OBC style! Happy Collecting!
he and I met at Ken Morganti's place for an OBC style swap session.  After

Date: Sun, 13 May 2001 22:51:27 -0400 From: "Steve Rittenberg" I am sitting here with my 1968 Topps All Stars (#361-380) in front of me. I want to put together the puzzles on the back (Yaz and Cepeda). Looks tome like there are two different backs for these cards! There is a black/white back and a sepia/brown back. Put the two together and you can definitely see a difference. Has any one else discovered this? Is this a legitimate variation? I'll happily accept all the extras anyone has and re-distribute them to the variation collectors. Happy collecting!! ================= To: "Ramblings" Subject: Fw: Baseball's Past Comes Alive!! I was given a stack by a dealer friend (is that an oxymoron? dealer/friend). WHen I went to merge them with the ones I had I noticed there are different questions on the cards. Variation cards. WOW. Does anyone know how many there are? Are there 2 different sets of question for each team? Help. (I need at least Detroit Tigers, LA Dodgers & Seattle Pilots, plus many variations, depending on the info I fuind Sticking on the variation theme. RC Cola issued a set of 294 football cans in 1977. This set is for the truly masochiistic among us. The Baseball are bad enough, 80 cans in 1976 and 100 in 1977, the equivalent of 7 1/2 cases of pop cans. The football is the set of 12 1/2 cases. I am working on the above sets (and would love to get some of the 35 Basketball cans). I have only 50 or so football cans. Underneath the player's picture is a trivia statement. There are different trivia statements for the same player. Again, is there only 2 different for each player? Is there at least 2 different for each player. Just what I need, double the set to 25 cases of pop cans. And I wonder why I am still single. The BB wantlist is on my OBC wantlist. If you have other sport cans to trade let me know. Of course I have some to trade. Anyone have any of the above Fleer or Rc Cola to trade. I have some I picked up some Yearbooks from the early 1970s recently. Jim Hatch drove down from NH and James came from GA along with his cousin (who was the actual driver) from NY. We all gathered at my house for a swap session. Rick Redpath was unable to attend in person, but was still there in spirit, as he provided an envelope stuffed with old cards - including a few on my 1967 list. THANKS RICK!! James found a few more 67's on my list (THANKS JAMES!!) a lot easier that he was able to find my house. The directions from Mapquest are pretty detailed, but not always the recommended method of actually getting somewhere. After a couple calls on the cell phone, I was able to guide him in. I had already checked it out. It looks great, but it's $49.95 for a nine week season. I decided to play anyway, but at $49.95 a pop, it's not something I can afford to do very often. I think it will be a lot of fun. I drafted a lineup full of my favorites from the 60s and 70s. Mantle, Tresh, Jim Ray Hart, Oscar Gamble, etc. However, since there's a salary cap, I alsohad to be thrifty, and picked up some cheaper role players. Rodney Scott,Fred Valentine, like that. Versatile, switch hitters to fill in the roster. Still, I think it'll be a one-shot deal. It's just too expensive. However, I have an idea. I have a computer sim program very similar to what Diamond Legends is using to run their game. It's called Strat-O-Matic Baseball. I have all the players from 1950 to date on their yearly teams, and all the players in history with their career stats. The only thing I wouldn't have is salary cap capability, but that can be easily simulated usingsmaller player pools if desired. So, here's the idea: If enough OBCers are interested, I would be willing to run a league like Diamond Legends, at no cost, of course. A couple of ideas would be to run a straight draft in which all players are eligible (using career average stats). Or, if we wish a salary cap effect, everyone could choose a team and a decade (ie, Giants of the 60s) and draft their own team. There'd be a few simple decisions necessary - for example, the Giants of the 60s wouldn't be able to draft Felipe Alou. Although he played for the Giants in the 60's, (1960-1963) he spent more of the decade with the Braves (64-69). So, he'd be eligible only for the Braves in our league. I think you'd be surprised howmuch of a challenge (and fun!) it'd be to put together a team using those guidelines! You can still get a good, strong team - but with enough limitations to make it realistic, like a salary cap. For example, the '60s Giants would still probably end up using Jesus Alou, either with his career stats or best year (probably his 1965 or 1967 version), good singles hitter, good outfielder, but no power, no speed, never takes a walk. Once the team is drafted, you give me a computer manager, ie, lineups for LHP and RHP, pitching rotations, manager tendencies (steal aggressively, never let Oscar Gamble face a LHP, etc), and we're ready to play! Drop me a line, or post to the list if you're interested in either version. If we can get even an eight team league (or four eight team leagues - 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, whatever!) I'm willing to do it. Game results and standings would be easily emailed to the group, or posted on a web-site. Date: Mon, 21 May 2001 10:49:07 -0700 From: "Grant Rainsley" My bride is away for this long weekend (up here anyways) on her annual "Sister's Weekend." I at least got the back lawn cut yesterday, then had a visit from a chap who was interested in a bunch of my CFL memorabilia and cards. It was a short visit, and he came prepared to deal. In short, he left with quite a bit of stuff....Mike Rich, relax...I didn't show him the '64 CFL Coke caps that you crave...they are safe. He came bearing BB cards from the '60's...and quite a stack of stars, for the most part in quite nice condition...no beaters in the bunch! Unfortunately, I had most of them, but I took them anyways, for two reasons: -I would like to see these stay in OBC if possible. If not, they are destined for Ebay so I can recover some of my costs. -I want him to come back...I have more CFL stuff he wants, and he has more BB that I want. Anyways, to make a long story even longer, there are Mantles, Musials, Maris, Robby(s), and more both Topps and Fleers. Ideally, I would like to trade for similar, Mantle for Mantle for example, but I am flexible. I have posted a partial list on the OBC Specialties Board for those that care to peruse it. I have set it to expire in 10 days. If you see anything you are interested in, please drop me a line, and I'll give a description of the card, or if I can get the scanner to cooperate, send you a pic. Ideally, I would like to fill some holes in the binders from '60 to '64, around VG+, which is my main focus, and I can send a wishlist. The worst part? One of the cards I got is a '67 Mantle, and it is crying out to be slabbed, unlike anything else in my collection. I think there is a Show coming up in Vancouver this fall, and the slab artists are supposed to be there...might have to break down and do it. May God forgive me for being so mercenary. The annual get-together in Vegas proves to be one of the highlights of my year and this year was no exception. Here's the not so brief rundown of the weekend's events... MUST BE PRESENT TO EAT: Ribfest kicked off the official (as if gets) ceremonies for V2K+1 as Joel Glickman flipped the switch for the misting system in Mike Hair's back yard. There was a brief swap session before our meal. It's hard to believe, but I think Mike outdid himself with this year's batch of ribs. I am sure I set my all time record high in number of ribs consumed. It was even debated that I may have eaten the most of the group. I'm not sure, since I got a late start (I was checking wantlists for a while) and I had half a bushel of Peter's strawberries to fill me up as well. HITTING THE STREETS: The game of half rubber after Ribfest was an exciting event that went down to the wire. Rick Ellison captured the hitting crown with an extensive at bat that lasted forever, since we couldn't find anyone to catch the ball. Joe Cerullo fanned Trips repeatedly, but in order to record the out, the catcher has to catch the ball. This proved to be near impossible, especially with darkness setting in near the end of the game. After going through three catchers, I was finally able to hold onto one of the dipping, darting, drifting half spheres. The damage had already been done though, so Rick walked off the field with the title as the game was called due to darkness. LUCKY SEVENS: As some of you may know, there was some gambling included in the V2K+1 schedule. Railroad Pass is the traditional favorite gathering place for this activity, which followed the half rubber game. I didn't participate in the OBC session at the craps table, but instead decided to play some blackjack. The first table I sat down at was OK, but I wanted to play at another table that featured a side bet which paid off for every blackjack dealt. That proved to be a mistake, since I sat there for at least an hour before finally getting one. Somehow I walked off on the plus side for the evening, despite dropping a fortune into the one armed bandits. My first night in Bally's was very successful. I hit a couple ($5 and $10) slot machines for $750 and $1000 and was up over $1300 at one point... I managed to give most of that back over the next three days, but came home with only $100 less than I left the house with. Considering I spent more than twice that amount at the card shop alone, it was a positive financial experience. FORE!!: The OBC golf tournament featured a new format this year. A modified scramble was instituted and made the event a lot more fun. The players on each team would al tee off and the best drive was then played individually after that. The two best scores for each hole would count towards the team total. How Mike Hair came up with the 'fair' teams is still debatable in my opinion. Rick Ellison and myself shouldn't be on the same course at the same time, never mind the same team. Joe Cerullo and Mike's friend Carl were also on my team. I shot the round of my life and we still got spanked by Mike's team of ringers - Mike, David K, George Hay and Joel. I was picked as the dark horse of our group and I did play way above my head, especially for someone who hits the links only once or twice a year. My drive was the best on the team on quite a number of holes... which either says that my fellow teammates played a bad round or we really didn't have too strong a team to begin with. It was still a lot of fun and the weather was gorgeous. I'M CUUUUTE!!: After tearing up the course, we treated ourselves to a round of drinks at Tee Shots - where we also enjoyed breakfast beforehand. I was asked for an ID when I ordered my traditional fufu drink (strawberry daiquiri), saying I had a 'baby face'. This was also coupled with the opinion of Josh's girlfriend Christie (SP?), who told Josh she thought I was cute. I had a few laughs teasing Josh by playfully flirting with her over the course of the weekend after that. I'LL BE IN WORK ON MONDAY NIGHT: Lunch on Sat. was at the Holy Cow restaurant. Everyone gathered at one (crowded) table for a meal. Afterwards, we pitched in to play the Megabucks slot machine which boasted an $8 million jackpot. After building our $150 ante to almost $200 at one point, we eventually lost all of it. It did take quite a while though, with each person in the group getting about three turns at spinning the wheels. THE PRICE OF LOYALTY: The trip to see the Las Vegas AAA entry (the 51's) play the Fresno Grizzlies was another memorable one. Fireworks after the game weren't the only highlight. OBC took up an entire row of seats at the game and we played our own game over the course of the contest. A cup was passed from person to person as the game went along. Each person dropped a quarter into the cup after it was passed to them. If the batter hit a home run while you had the cup, you got to keep the contents. Otherwise you passed the cup onto the next person after the batter recorded an out or reached base. There was one home run hit in the game early on, so the cup had just over $8 in it as the game wound down to the last inning. The person holding the cup when the last out is recorded keeps whatever is left in the cup. As fate would have it, Rick Ellison was holding the cup with one out and a runner on first in the top of the ninth. A double play would end the game and Rick would win the money. This meant the Grizzlies (a Giants farm team) - a team Mr. Ellison was known to be cheering for would have to fail and the 51's (a Dodger affiliated club and one that Trips stated he would never root for) would win the game. Let the record show that Rick Ellison was seen cheering for the Grizzlies' batter to hit into a double play and end the game instead of a home run to tie things up!! As it turned out, justice was served somewhat, since the 51's failed to turn a game ending double play and the cup was passed to the next person (Margaret) for the final out. WHY DO THEY PUT BEDS IN HOTEL ROOMS?: I woke up at 1PM on Thurs. and when I went to sleep after getting home on Monday afternoon, I had been awake for roughly 90% of the hours in between. I was too busy having fun to stop for any rest. The first time I did get a chance to sleep was after checking into the Sahara. My nap lasted only an hour or so, when Todd and Rick arrived and we had to try to straighten out the confusion I caused with reservations by checking in early... I think it might still be messed up. THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN: A large group of OBC'ers made it to the local card shop for some serious wantlist hitting. I cut my 67 and 68 lists down to about a dozen each and found a bunch of 55T FB cards I needed. I was also FINALLY presented with the V99 golf shirt from Joel Glickman, which will now be worn with pride at all future golf games in Vegas. A few people made this their last meeting of the weekend, as they had planes to catch or drives home ahead of them. CLOSING CEREMONIES: The final official (as it gets) event of the weekend was held Sunday at Hooters bar and grill (a notable improvement over past closing ceremonies I might add ). I was there along with some other people I may or may not have known and who shall remain nameless for the purposes of this e-mail. A large helping of buffalo wings and shrimp was devoured and washed down with a few pitchers of something a little stronger than soda. Ideas were discussed and some plans made for next year's Vegas trip, which may also include a cruise attached to the many traditional festivities already enjoyed by Vegas participators. I am already looking forward to going back again next year. Thanks for reading all this way. Hope you enjoyed my recap of some of the events and maybe you'll get a chance to join in the fun down the road. A nice Tipton example, eh? ================= Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 22:45:14 EDT Subject: (no subject) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: topgolf@aol.com Notes from a wild V2001=85.. Well, another Vegas eVent is in the books, V2001 was another great time, based on old and a few new traditions. Old Tradition 1: The ribfest was held on Friday night with 28 pounds of ribs being prepared. In the rib eating contest favorite Big Al Cummings was a DNS opening the way for the others. Ken Morganti and Todd Knowles seemed to be the leaders in the clubhouse for most ribs eaten, with Joe Cerullo joining Peter Iversen in the burnt rib division. Prior to the feast was a spirited round of card swapping in which my wantlist took some major hits including a 54 Jackie Robinson and a major dent in my Post Cereal cards. Concluding the activities on Fuerte Court was the traditional half rubber game in which Rick Ellison prevailed. Also for those scoring at home, neighbor Joe mentioned his pool in an incredible 1.8 seconds. Old Tradition 2: Railroad Pass and the search for Capt'n Craps. Off to Railroad pass, a small contingent that failed to inflict the financial impact of the past years, but had fun just the same. Rick, Mike and Peter hit the craps table while David, Joe, Ken and Todd hit the blackjack tables. The Henna Handed Ellison approached his former form with a good roll at the craps table. But, alas, I'm afraid we failed to learn from the past and forgot to balance the table with OBCers. Old Tradition 3/ new twist. The semi tradition golfers excuse breakfast was held at a new spot the promises to become a part of the tradition. Tee Shots provided a great breakfast, with the some old excuses (Bad back, haven't played much=85), and a new excuse that almost worked: Joe Cerullo claiming the dreaded "Mulch Elbow" It was then off to the golf course for the Sixth First Annual Golf Outing, also know as :the Championship". Since the tournament has been won by the same person for the past five years, this years format was a modified scramble where the four member teams pick the best drive in a scramble and then play their own balls out, with 2 scores counting for the team. The team of Glickman, Kolenda, Hay and Hair prevailed over the team of Darnell, Morganti, Ellison and Cerullo. Although there was some whining from the losing team as to the fairness of the teams, it is a fact that the other team was in the lead until the 14th hole when Joel "let me hit it, it just may go in" Glickman, and George"Pole Bender" Hay ran in back to back incredible 77 foot birdie putts. Two birdies on 17 also help to put the game safely away, and led for a satisfying round of drinks back at Tee shots. Old Tradition 4: Off to Holy Cow for eat, drink and merriment. Great food, great beer, and great fun. We even talked to the famous (Where's) Phil in a phone conversation. In our version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" (we all did) the tradition run a Mega Bucks left us all ten dollars lighter, but provided much fun and excitement in our pursuit. Old tradition 5 Take me out to the ballgame. It was off to Cashman Field to see the Junior Dodgers put a whoopin' on the Junior Giants. Todd starteda new tradition with the quarter game, which led Trips to sell out his beloved Giants for a mere $8.75. Old Tradition 6: Playball! The local card shop opened an hour early for a special OBC session. It may well be the most profitable hour the shop has ever had, as the OBCers spent freely on the great deals that we always get from Rick, the owner of the shop. New tradition 2: Closing Ceremonies at Hooters. Hey, an hour of card shopping can make a man hungry. Wings, Oysters and Shrimp served as a great closing meal for the bunch that had been going almost non stop for 48 hours. So, another comes and goes. While all the activities are fun, it really is more about the friendships and OBC spirit than anything else. We are developing a core group of participants (albeit some with asterisks) but would always welcome new blood (which reminds me, the Rookie Shoes are getting rather stiff from sitting in the garage). Next years eVent will be held in Mid May, and we are even thinking of adding an optional cruise after I want to thank all those who came to share the great times, Cindy and I always enjoy the wild weekend and the great people. Rest well, ================= Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 22:09:47 -0500 To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: Vegas 2001 From: David Kolenda Kind of tough to follow Kens Vegas 2001 report. Arrived in town Thursday AM and left on Monday AM. Really needed the few days off, as things had been real busy here. Had spent the previous four days painting the house. Contractors think one house, one color. (off white) Had the chance to go in and repaint before they started to hang doors, trim, and cabinets. Thursday was spent at the tables at Sahara with little or no luck. A trip to the RIO for their seafood buffet and a stop at a black jack table there helped improve things a little. Joe Cerullo arrived at about 11PM and picked him up at the airport. 4 hours sleep and it's Friday. Started to see a few people roll in. Spent most of the day until it was time to head to Mikes at the tables. Still not a lot of luck. The rib feast just seems to get better every year. The gang was all there. George and Lucy Hay, Al and Dottie Cummings, Ken M, Josh L and Christie, Peter and Denice, Trips, Joel Glickman, Todd Knowles, Joe Cerullo, Mike and myself. As Ken stated, the cards were flying. Thanks to all who found a few off my list. The trip to railroad pass proved to be a dud for the 2nd year in a row. Lost a few hundred more. Back at the Sahara things got better. Joe and I did a number on some $1 slots. Didn't hit the big one, but we both made about $500. 5 hours sleep tonight (BIG GOLF MATCH IN THE MORNING) Looks like it's going to be a bad year on the course. With the back getting no better it gets more difficult to swing the clubs. Then Mike puts Joel on our team. Shoulder surgery will keep him from teeing off. Hardly fair teams with two criples on one team, BUT. We manage to stay in the hunt on the front 9. Down a couple shots at the turn. Maybe it was the moment of silence at the 10th tee that did it. The good Lord must of thought we were asking for some help, while all along we were praying for the guy Joel drilled in the privites two years ago. Think it was the 12th hole when things turned around. Our best drive on this par 3 was 77 feet from the pin. Joel decided to go first and give us a look at the line. Hence the now famous "hit it, it might go in" Joel sinks a putt from the fringe. I lay one up about 20 inches from the hole. Looks like a bird and a par for us on a tough hole. George Hay steps up and drills the pin for our second bird. 2 holes later, Mike drops a tee shot 12 - 16 inches from the pin and we get to more birds. When it's all over, the HEAVY UNDERDOGS pull off a victory. Holly Cow is the stop in the afternoon. Good food, good drinks, and another attempt at the mega bucks slot. I pass on the ballgame as the back will not take the hard seats for any period of time. Go back and hit the slots and make a few more $$$$$$. Sat. ends with another 5 hours sleep. Card shop in the morning. Sunday brings a tough time at the tables. Lose two many hundreds to quick. Thank God it's off to the card shop. Find a few 55 Bowmans that I need. Rick the owner offers a great deal on some signed balls. Trips and I each get 5 or 6. A trip to Hooters brings on the closing act for V2001. Back at the Sahara things are going so so at the gambling. Get ito a Texas hold-em poker game about 10PM. Finally calls it quits at 3AM with a bundle of cash in hand. 3 hours sleep and it up to head for the airport. Left Vegas with about $200 less than I arrived with. All in all a decent weekend, thanks to the slots and the final poker game. It's been a number of years that we have been doing the Vegas thing. This was probally one of the best we have had. Thanks to all for a great weekend. A GREAT TIME WITH MANY LAUGHS. Looking forward to V02. ONE REQUEST MIKE, Can we let the others tee off first next year? Miss watching Trips swing the clubs. Kind of reminds me of a $2 whore swinging her ass on a street corner. Thanks again to all. David K. I GOT UM, YOU NEED UM, YOU GET UM. ================= To: Subject: Spam Egg Sausage and Spam Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 23:07:03 -0400 From: "Rick Redpath" [It's only got a little spam in it...] Guys, you'll have to excuse me getting all sentimental, but it is exactly two years ago to the day that the Guru sent out an email welcoming me (and Jim and Tim and Randy and Dave P. and George V.) to OBC. Actually it was two years ago to the day yesterday at 9:30 in the morning, because I just looked it up, but celebrating today is no less meaningful. It was a thrill then, and it is still a thrill today to be part of this 125 man roster! My dupes have long since run dry and so has my spending money, but my wantlist and my obsession both continue to grow and I can't possibly thank you guys enough for ruining my life like this :-) Now, let's move on to a Little League update, shall we? One month into the season, the AA Burlington Bees (Needham, Mass.) are sporting a 5-4 record and riding a nice little 2 game winning streak -- not bad at all. The last few games have featured an excruciating 10-9 loss, an excruciating 10-9 win, a blow out in both directions and a couple of pitching and defensive gems, with scores of 7-3 and 12-2. Last night the Bees played a team that had gone winless in their first seven games. Make it eight now. Those poor kids were doing jumping jacks before the game, trying to get something started, trying for a little magic that might stop the slide. But, like the old cliche says, pitching and defense beats jumping jacks every time... The real coach was out of town last week and left me in charge for a couple of games, giving me a chance to be Jimy Williams for a day. "Why is HE pitching today???" "Manager's decision..." You could (I did) spend a good deal of time trying to make out a lineup with 11 kids, trying to be fair, trying to be sensible and put the right guys in the right place at the right time. Right... My careful, sensible, fair plan fell apart pretty quickly when my starting pitcher (who I built the lineup around) was a last-minute no-show. Try scrambling a lineup to accomodate one missing player just before game time and you begin to appreciate the joy of being just an assistant coach instead of the guy in charge. It would be okay if you could just sit down on the bench and work it out, but coaching these kids is kind of like having 10 children in the kitchen with you when you're trying to make dinner. "Coach, when do I catch?" "Coach, when do I pitch?" "Please tell me I'm pitching. Please tell me I'm pitching. Please tell me I'm pitching." (Actually, James, you're not pitching.) "Third Base? Again? Nobody ever hits it to third base." (Exactly) "Coach, where am I playing?" "Right Field." "Which one is that?" "Coach, can I be the closer. I'm a pretty good closer. But this isn't my lucky field. And I'm not too good against right handed batters..." "I don't think that ump likes me..." "Coach is it better to strike out when you swing or when you don't swing?" But it's a blast and you guys know that at least as much as I do. One month to go in the season, so stay tuned... A belated welcome to Robert and Jeff, a belated welcome back to the Grand Poobah of etc. etc. and a timely thanks to Ken for the Las Vegas wrap-up report! I heartily agree with the sentiment that Mike, Ken and Dave projected =96 also that this was one of the best times among all the great times Denice and I have had with the OBCers who have attended the last 4 Vegas gatherings.I feel like I get to know different sides of people and enjoy them more each year. I missed having Al, Dottie and Josh (and Christie) at our hotel so I didn=92t see them as much (hey Al and Dottie =96 Denice won $10.00 on that Cherry Pie machine=85!) =96 but it was great to see Joe again after the new baby boy kept him away last year and spending more fleeting moments with Todd was great too. I am very glad that Cindy was in town this year and Mike is the most gracious host! When Rick and I played craps with Mike at Railroad Pass (a quarter table by the way) we would watch and just bet whatever Mike did =96 =93give me a 75 cent 4 and 10=94 =96 and etc. At one point Rick and I almost followed Mike to the bathroom. It was great to watch and learn from him and although I rolled abysmally =96 Mike and Rick eachhad a decent roll. I enjoyed seeing Ken staring back at me through his sleepless eyes though I am not sure he always saw me =96 and watching Joe andDave gamble (and hopefully bringing them some luck) is always such a pleasure for me... You should have seen Dave=92s pile of chips at the Texas Hold =91em game that last night. I have to think seriously about trying out the golf next year so I can spend some more time with George and Joel. But that is my traditional morning with Denice and she is a lot better looking than George or Joel=85 And there are also those rookie shoes that I would have to contend with. Since the Vegas events are overflowing with tradition perhaps I should just continue my =93tradition=94 and not golf=85 HavingRick on hand to tease in person was much better than doing it over the phone and although Margaret was late and almost got an "*" =96 it was good to see her smiling face =96 and I am glad she won the =91jackpot=92 at the ball game and not Rick. This whole business of Rick cheering for the DODGER AAA team against the GIANT AAA team just for a few dollars in a plastic cup is just one more bit of evidence about the harsh reality of the money grubbing that goes on in baseball today. We can complain about the Owners - their overspending and cheep attitudes =96 the players =96 their whining and the multi million dollar salaries =96 but when a loyal fan sells out his team for a cup partially full of quarters=85. Well =96 I am just glad that all of you were not thereto see it. I mean wanton rooting for the Dodgers. A one, two, three 9th inning and Rick wins the bucks =96 so he shouts his team down - his team who are only down by two measly runs=85. One thing is for certain =96 Rick may hate the Dodgers but not as much as he likes to win (money). Rick I am still in shock! I will light a candle for you this weekend=85. I have one more idea before I give up. Instead of drafting players, we would draft teams, ie, the 1968 Tigers, 1962 Giants, etc. EVERY team from 1950 to date is available. For those with limited time to participate, that could be the end of your obligations. For those who want to get into it more, the possibilities are as endless as managing a team itself. Tinkering with the lineups, managerial settings, starting rotations, you name it, right down to settings like "Gates Brown avoids lefty pitching, never sac bunts, comes out for defense if team leads". I just uploaded a file with a sample report. It's best viewed as a simple text file, using notepad with "word wrap" turned off. It would come out at least weekly, and more often for those interested. It can be easily revised to include box scores, expanded league leaders, etc. Joining the league can mean as little as just choosing a team and letting the computer run it (default settings from the original manager come with the program) to as much as stopping by the house to play your games live, and anything inbetween. Max league size is 28 teams. I usually have some sort of a project going on anyway, so if you're interested in participating, just let me know. Only five guys responded to the original idea, so if this one flops, I promise to give up. Thanks! ================= Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 14:43:00 EDT Subject: Vegas 2001 Report To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: tply@aol.com All - It is hard to top Ken's, Mike's, David's, Peter's and other reports from this year's fantastic Vegas OBC gathering! As always Mike and Cindy went out of their way to make us feel right at home! Mike seems to get better and better as the best rib chef in the country (although I am not sure how this is possible) and this year the ribs were fantastic again! The half rubber game was a lot of fun even though darkness was on my side at the end to ace out Josh for the win. I am sure had the sun stayed up many OBCers would have gone yard! Not only did Mike's neighbor take only seconds to mention his pool he also declared himself the half rubber long ball champion from two years ago. No worry Peter your record is well documented and the ball you hit had to be tracked down by vehicle! This year was a little different for Margaret and I. Margaret had to work on Friday and could only get a standby ticket for Friday afternoon while I flew in on Friday morning. I began to get a little nervous Friday evening at the ribfest when Margaret called and said she had already missed three flights and hoped to get on one of the three remaining flights. The ribfest, swap meet and half rubber game ended with no Margaret. As earlier reported we traveled from Mike's house to our traditional (as traditional as it gets) gambling spot "Railroad Pass"! While we didn't have the luck we have had in past years it was still fun! I think we should heed Mike's suggestion next time and have OBCers posted all around the craps table and not bunched up on one end. Although Peter and I found it comforting standing along side Mike to follow is lead on bets! Mike decided to call it a night around 10 PM and no sooner had he walked out the door when Margaret walked in the other door declaring "No asterisk, I made it before midnight!" (more on this later). The next morning at the official (as official as it gets) golfers ( I use this term loosely) liars breakfast I have to agree Joe had the best excuse despite demands for my x-rays from my cracked rib from last year and Joel actually showing everyone his scar! As mentioned by Ken the teams were decided by Mike and I have to agree Ken and I could be dangerous (although not as dangerous as Joel) on a golf course together! Lucky for us Ken was in a zone and played very well, otherwise we would have been beaten by a larger margin! I like the new format that prevents the others for always gunning for me! Later we all gathered at Holy Cow and Mike forgot to mention he had to buy the first round! Mike lost a bet with me when my fantasy team swept his in our first face to face competition. Before we arrived at Holy Cow the group conspired a means of forcing me to by the second round! I bought the second round of drinks to insure Margaret would not have a asterisk for her arrival late although she did arrive before midnight! It is amazing how the official rules (as official as they get) seem to change to suit a purpose, this purpose was for me to buy the second round! I guess some traditions will never die and I will always be buying at the Holy Cow (this is NOT an offer to buy the first round next year). The ball game - as earlier reported we had a great time watching the ball game and my rooting for the Dodgers has been greatly inflated in earlier reports! You could hardly call that rooting compared to what I was doing earlier for the Giants and I am sure Denise and others could back me up on The trip to the card shop and one of Mike's favorite dealers was a great success! I knocked a lot of cards off my wantlist. Thanks to Peter for printing everyone's wantlist and bringing them along! I even got a great deal on six autograph balls like David mentioned! Margaret now knows we have started a new tradition by having lunch at Hooters right after the raid of the card shop! Yet another great tradition begins! I had to say good-bye to Margaret on Sunday night as she left and I moved for the Sahara to the Tropicana to spend the rest of the week (Monday through Friday) on business. Mike I am sorry I didn't call you during the week, work kept me busy from 630 AM to 5 PM every day and coworkers took me to dinner for my birthday. I turned fifty on Thursday in Las Vegas and of Friday morning I won enough money to pay for a brand new scanner and a digital camera I purchased on Saturday when I returned home! Lastly, I want to thank Mike and Cindy for being the wonderful friends they are and always making all of us that attends the Vegas event feel right at home! Words cannot describe the generosity of Mike and Cindy! It was also great to see friends again as always and to meet Todd in person for the first time after all these years! We need a rookie for next year and more than one will be great! Geno and others I hope you will find the time to attend next year, you will not regret Triipleplay (Rick) ================= Date: Sun, 27 May 2001 16:01:14 -0400 (GMT-04:00) To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, Chahta@eudoramail.com, Tripleplay@aol.com, TWE3@aol.com, glk@aol.com, chmielep@milwaukee.tec.wi.us, k2doe@aol.com Subject: I added photos of the autograph baseball from Vegas 2001! It was a nice event and I was pleased to see that most folks deserving of recognition were either present or recognized on the TV bits. Yes, I said MOST... The fact that Spaceman wasn't there was an obvious fact, but there was no mention of it that I heard on the radio--I wonder if they were told not to bring it up. I really can't believe that Ned Martin was not even mentioned. Not only was he Gowdy's sidekick back in the early '60s (if I remember correctly from my high school years), but he then went on to be the real voice of the Red Sox for many years. the olde Friar -----Original Message----- From: Jrhatchjr@aol.com To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Date: Monday, May 28, 2001 9:39 AM Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Red Sox 100th Anniversary Yesterday at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox celebrated their 100th year with a pre-game ceremony. Sean McDonough was the emcee, introducing managers, scouts and announcers of the past which were intermingled pre-recorded TV tributes. It was a nice event and I was pleased to see that most folks deserving of recognition were either present or recognized on the TV bits. Yes, I said MOST... Two announcers were recognized: Curt Gowdy and Ken Coleman - rightfully so. I was a little disappointed that Ned Martin wasn't mentioned at all, nor was Joe Castiglione. Managers were also given their due, including Joe Cronin, John McNamara and Walpole Joe Morgan. Curiously neglected was Dick Williams, leader of the Impossible Dream year of 1967. The epitome of neglect came with the pitchers. All but one of the throughout the years were mentioned. The one that wasn't: Spaceman Bill Lee. Lee won 94 games from 1969-1978 and won 17 games three years in a row. This may not seem like a centurian accomplishment, but it is stellar when you compare it to John Tudor's Red Sox career, winner of 39 games frm and who was recognized at Fenway. Don't get me wrong...John Tudor is one of my favorite "crafty lefthanders." And, I also realize that the Red Sox avoid Bill Lee like he has the plague. I'm just using Tudor as an example of how good a pitcher Lee was in his day and how this really could not be a true recognition of Red Sox history without mention of Lee. Politics? Ya think?? I'm sure Lee could have purchased a ticket to attend if he wanted to ;-) To their credit, the Red Sox did mention some forgotten names, such as Lou Criger and Duffy Lewis. I just wish they'd get over the Lee thing. And yes...appropriately anough, it was overcast and wet throughout And, no...I wasn't bright enough to tape it. Sorry gang! Happy Collecting! Yahoo! One area that is rather lacking is our checklists section. I would really like to beef this up. It needs to be cleaned up and enhanced by someone with some HTML experience, who also has a little creativity. I am finding my hands to be rather full with the rest of the webpage to take on this project right now, so if there are any aspiring webmasters out there that would be interested in this project, drop me a line and I'll pass along some files/info I have accumulated that will come in handy for the pages. To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, jgreco@us.imshealth.com From: cardclctor@aol.com Hi gang, A few ramblings, a few thanks, and maybe a few things in between... As part of my effort to relieve myself of as much work as possible, I've utilized the services of my cousin (Jeremy) from NY. He goes to school at St. Lawrence U. and asked me if it was OK to work at the store with me for the summer. After clearing it with the store manager, he was hired at a rate he couldn't get working upstate. (His previous employer - a metal casting company, recently laid off a ton of people, so he couldn't go back there this summer.) He's been staying here with me as my personal slave around the house - and working alongside me with a similar job description Today I got a phone message from yet another cousin, who said he was currently out of work asked if Stop & Shop is hiring. At least he's married and has a place to live, so I won't have to provide room and board for the whole family - I wonder if I could contract him to paint the house and mow my lawn on the side? I'll probably set him up at another store so I won't have to deal with him - too much responsibility keeping an eye on everyone ;-) Oh, and if anyone's interested, you can start out at $9.75/hr. - but there's no more room here A couple quick thank yous going out to Mike Rich, who adds my name to his recent mail barrage with a HUGE hit to the 60 Leaf set - Art Ditmar. Only #92 (Joe Martin) left on the list now!! The high numbers in this set are grossly undervalued, since I think they're harder to find than 52 Topps highs... but I'm not complaining that they're not priced accordingly. THANKS MIKE!! Another arrival from north of the border. Grant Rainsley sends me something green that isn't from the woodie set. I offered to start Grant on the 72 Topps set and he insisted on paying me - does anyone who's worked on the set see the humor in this? They don't call them 'psychos' only for the color scheme you know. THANKS GRANT!! (Hey, I know a Dealer Scum selling high numbers for $2 each ) Some of you Vegas attendees may have heard me mention one of the players in the AAA game we saw was on my fantasy team (Paul LoDuca). The other night he went 6-6 with a dinger for the LA Dodgers and helped my fantasy team to it's first head to head win of the year - it's already been a long season for me. That reminds me, I wish I had remembered my program from the game - I wanted to give it to Sean McGowan, since his namesake was listed on the Fresno roster. I have one more item from Vegas I neglected to mention in my BRUSH WITH GREATNESS: Early Friday morning, I found myself seated at a Pai Gow table at Bally's. Sitting next to me was an older gentleman named Danny. (I found this out as he chatted every once in a while with the pit boss, who called him by his first name.) Anyway, he got up at one point for a quick bathroom break. The pit boss came over to the table while he was away and asked me if I knew who he was and if I was a baseball fan. I happened to be sittng beside none other than Danny Cater. Mr. Cater seemed as though he didn't want the notoriety, so I didn't ask about his playing days or anything, but he did return to a conversation about old baseball cards. I was almost positive I had one Danny Cater card with me - a 1972 high number (I did have a tipton gem)... I should've came back down from the room with it and handed it to him - or the pit boss if he didn't want it. It was a lot more fun taking some of the house money though. One final question - who besides Poobah is working on 1941 Double Plays cut in half? I've got a small stack waiting to go out to whoever's interested. Just say the word and they're yours. On May 15th I used a "Buy It Now" option on a '52 Bowman card, a high number I've needed for months. With shipping/insurance, the card cost me $50. It was advertised as Nrmt+ and looked good from the scan. Here's the link: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item1144247735 When I opened the bubble mailer today and took the card out, it CLEARLY hadan upper corner bend that dropped the card to Vg or Vg+ -- not Ex, Exmt, not Nrmt and certainly not Nrmt+. So, pretty steamed after seeing this, I wrote the following --- I just opened the package with the below listing in it (link from above) -Auction ended on May 14th, with Buy it Now for $45 -- Easy Invoice #5731 ofyours. Card is NOT Nrmt+ -- it has a bad corner bend on the upper left. I'm sending it back for a full refund of $45 plus the $5 I paid for shipping plus the .55 I'm paying now to ship it back. I'm very disappointed that I used the "Buy It Now" system with you and the card it turns out is VG+, not Nrmt+. I won't leave negative feedback as I know these things can be overlooked, but it is one of the last 5 cards I need for the set, and now I have to continue searching for one in Ex+ or better condition. Mike Diamanti Ten minutes later I get this from the "Sultan of Swat -- SOS" dealer hisself....... "First of all your attitude SUCKS! If you're displeased with a card you politely email the seller and discuss arrangements for a possible return of an item. You DO NOT write an email such as the one you just sent me. As for returning the card, I don't think so. I grade extremely accurately as my 7,000 plus positive feedbacks will attest. I might have considered issuing a credit minus the shipping fees had you only had the decency and professionalism to write even a somewhat diplomatic letter. But the one you sent me was way out of line, and gave me absolutely NO incentive to even consider any type of return. So if you sent the card, you'll get it back. If you haven't sent the card, don't, because I graded it accurately, and will not be issuing a credit or a refund. In the future please cherry pick someone else's auctions as I will delete any future bids you place on any of my With much disdain, Sultans of Swat" Two hours later, after I calmed down, I wrote him THIS ---- "MY attitude sucks?!?! You are the guy selling me a card you grade as Nrmt+. The card arrives protected and insured very nicely. When I take the card out of its holder I can immediately spot the corner bend which immediately places the grade at Vg or Vg+ -- no matter WHAT the corners look like. Any of the 150 to 200 dealers I have bought from in the past 5 years have always apologized for sending me an incorrectly graded card. And out of 100s of transactions it has happened maybe 5 or 6 times -- including Bill Henderson on a '58T Mantle. But I am not even asking for an apology. I simply need you to take back thecard and reimburse me the money I spent on what was an inaccurate posting. You may have graded 1000s of cards and you may have done your best to gradeaccurately, but you or someone in your organization blew it on this one. Fine. A mistake was made, but for you to arrogantly insist you will not return my money, paid in good faith for a Nrmt+ card, is simply bad business.Attitude has nothing to do with it. I'm not going to make sure I have written you a perfectly diplomatic letter so you will feel "good" about what you should be doing in the first place -- apologizing for the mistake and returning my money. I am going to write you a letter of complaint, ask that you fix the situation, and then forget about it. I do have the decency and professionalism to notify you immediately, as soon as I opened the package, that you made a mistake and that I will not postnegative feedback based on simple human error. I was not writing you the original note to "give you an incentive" to "consider any type of return." I wrote the original letter to notify you that: a) I was grossly disappointed to spend $50 on a Nrmt+ card to find out when it arrived that it was VG+ b) that I would not post negative feedback over a simple grading mistake. As a professional person, selling cards over Ebay, you should be concerned when you or an employee makes a mistake grading a card. Strangers arerelying on your professionalism so they can obtain correctly graded material for personal pleasure as collectors or as investments for the future. By refusing to refund my money for a badly-graded card, you refuse to honor your pledge to sell me a correctly graded card. I hardly consider that goodbusiness or professional. "If you haven't sent the card, don't, because I graded it accurately, and will not be issuing a credit or a refund." I will be turning copies of this correspondence over to Ebay since you stiffed me for $50 on a card that was incorrectly graded. I would never on purpose make things difficult for anyone when it comes to Ebay. In your case, insisting that the card is graded properly and refusing to take it back for inspection, tells me that you are not reliable when it comes to selling vintage material over the Internet. Mike Diamanti" Am I NUTS ?! or is this guy? Haven't heard back from him, just finished dropping his VG+ card in the mail, and have completed my mission to warn fellow OBC brethren to watch out for this guy........Sheeeesshhh! Ebay will do little, but they will receive a full complaint from me. In six years, that is only the second time where an Ebay seller messed with me. Suitable for framing! :) OBC: Because only you can prevent Chris Speiers ================= To: "Ramblings" Subject: Bonus for me! Date: Thu, 31 May 2001 19:57:56 -0400 From: "Steve Rittenberg" While checking to see if I could upgrade any cards in my '65 Topps set, I found an OPC Aaron and Maris! I was blown away as the OPC ones are hard tofind. I have since found a replacement Aaron but maybe someone will be my hero and tell me they have an extra '65 Topps Maris for me. Also, maybe you'd like to look through your 1965 - 1967 albums and see if any OPC snuck in there. The task is not as hard as it sounds as 1965 OPC has just 283 cards and 1966 and 1967 have just 196. Should you find any, Iwill try as hard as I can to swap them for Topps. ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: the hits keep coming Date: Fri, 01 Jun 2001 02:10:44 From: "jeff sinclair" hey guys, more mail today. yuk chow sends a 4 pack of 69's and 10 hits to my 74's. neal thomas sends one of my long sought after psychos #771 and an upgrade #443. If you like, save it to a disc..or your own "Cool Baseball Pictures" folder.
