Great interview, Rob! ------------------ Forward Header -------------------- Originally From: Cycleback Subject: Interview with Rob Fitts on Japanese Baseball Cards Date: 10/02/2001 04:39pm JAPANESE BASEBALL MEMORABILIA: CYCLEBACK'S INTERVIEW WITH ROB FITTS October 2, 2001 Dr. Robert Fitts is an archeologist and author in New York City. He also an expert on Japanese baseball and baseball cards. His website, www.robsjapanesecards.com, has a nice pictoral history of Japanese baseballs card along with other recources. * * * * QUESTION: Where are you from and live and how did you get into baseball and baseball cards? ANSWER: Although I grew up in Philadelphia, I've lived in Manhattan 1991. In 1993, my wife was transferred to Tokyo. At the time, I was writing my Ph.D. dissertation in archaeology, so we packed up my books and moved over. We stayed for nearly two years. Before I moved to Tokyo, I collected American cards- especially Phillies. My collection was small. My first day in Tokyo, my wife took me to a ball game. It was a blast. They have full cheering sections in Japan- a lot like at a football game. I purchased the current year's Japanese cards later week. Over the following 2 years, I searched Tokyo for antique shops, flea markets and other places that might have cards. At the time Japanese were not very popular among the Japanese - there was only one card shop in all of Japan and it happened to be a mile from my house! - so when found them they were cheap. By the end of the 2 years, I had a strong collection. I still go back to Tokyo twice a year to look for Q: Are baseball cards as popular in Japan as here in the United A: Not as popular as in the US, but they are popular. Q: Is there appreciation for Japanese baseball cards in the United A: There are a few hundred serious collectors and many who collect Nomo or Ichiro cards. In general, the cards are truly undervalued at present. Sadaharu Oh cards are very popular here, but Japanese (Shigeo Nagashima) player's cards are not that popular. Q: Do the Japanese have an interest in American baseball and baseball A: Yes. Most of the cards shops in Japan- there are now hundreds- mostly US cards. Q: Is it correct for me to assume that, as a dealer in Japanese cards, you are happy about Ichiro's success in the United States? A; Of course. Ichiro has shown American fans that Japanese baseball be taken seriously. It has also spurred interest in older Japanese Q: Why would big stars in the prime of their careers, like Ichiro and Suzaki, want to play in the United States? A: Mainly, these stars want to play with the best. Although the leagues have many fine players and are truly fun, the overall play is asgood as MLB. Q: Was Hideo Nomo a big star in Japan before he came to the United A: Yes, Nomo was the best pitcher of his generation. When he was he dominated the Pacific League. His success was not that surprising those of us who saw him in Japan. I also saw Irabu pitch in Japan. He was just as good as Nomo. His lack of success is more surprising to me Nomo's achievements. Q: I notice that the high end sports auction houses, like MastroNet Leland's, offer very few Japanese cards. Do you have an opinion why? A: Every now and then they carry nice lots, but its true not all the time. American collectors still need to be educated about Japanese baseball. How many collectors out there would know that if they came across an old ball signed by Eiji Sawamura that they should pay up to thousand on the spot. The truly rare items sell well among the small of serious Japanese collectors but generally don't do as well among general public. Also, most of the great items are still in Japan or in the collections of the serious collectors, the items don't go on the market very often. There were some nice items in the Barry Halpern Q: What are some of your all-time favorite Japanese cards? A: My favorites are the colorful menko cards of the late 1940s and 1950s, especially the diecut mask set (a few are on my website). I like any Sadaharu Oh card. Q: Who's your all-time favorite Japanese player, and why? A: Sadaharu Oh. I collect all of his cards (I currently have between and 700 different) and memorabilia. I am also working on a pictorial checklist of his cards. Q: Do many Koreans and Chinese (Taiwan) play in Japan? How have they A: Yes, every year there are a number who play in Japan. I haven't of any problems. Q: Why do the Japanese uniforms have so much English on them? A: English writing looks 'cool' to Japanese just as Japanese writing cool to us. Q: Please describe the Japanese attitudes towards American players who play in Japan? A: A whole book has been writing on this (Robert Whiting's You Gotta Wa). Today, most foreign players are well accepted by the Japanese but not surprisingly the most popular stars are Japanese. Q: Some of the fads in the American hobby is professionally graded and memorabilia cards (autographed cards and cards with pieces of game used jersey, bat, etc). Are these areas popular in Japan? A: Yes. The grading craze isn't as popular but I think it will be soon. Game used bat and jersey cards of the Japanese stars are very Q: Do you collect American baseball items? What are your areas of A: I've limited my American collecting but I do have 3 active interests. I've started a type collection and I eventually hope to own an example of each type of Major League baseball card ever produced. I collect one of each Hall of Famer. I am also collecting the standard sets. I rarely buy cards for these. Instead, I am a member of a group called OBC (Old Baseball Cards). Groups members circulate wantlists and other members send them the cards they need. The guys very generous. Q: Do the Japanese collect memorabilia other than cards? What kind memorabilia is popular? Are autographs popular? A:Autograph collecting is a big part of Japanese culture. So baseball autographs are available even from early 20th century these are very expensive of course. Game used equipment is not given in Japan the way it is here, so it is VERY hard to find. Q: I know that you wrote the book on Japanese baseball players, and mentioned that you are working on another. Please describe them. A: I have just finished a book on the great Japanese players. It is Japanese Baseball Superstars and is co-authored by Gary Engel. It one page biographies of all of the Japanese Hall of Fame players and shorter bios of the non-player members of the Hall of Fame. It is illustrated with Japanese cards and a short checklist of cards for player is also provided. It is only available through my website. I now working on a short book called Introduction to Japanese Baseball Cards. This book will provide a history of Japanese bb cards and baseball. It will contain many illustrations of common and rare cards. It will be desktop published and should be available in November 2001. I hope that this short book will help educate American collectors about cards and help them enjoy these wonderful and undervalued cards. Of course, we all know that when it comes to dupes boxes, size matters. Well, after trying to hunt down 1961 commons for my set, I'm now left with about 5 of each Hal Bevan, Dutch Doterrer, and "Fill in name here." What to do with all these you ask? Well, I decided to put a few on Ebay to get a couple bucks in my Paypal account to buy some high numbers. Of course, this curdles the blood of some OBCers to see Tipton-type cards on Ebay from fellow OBCers, but I assure you if you happen across my lot and see one you need, email me because mostlikely I have another one in a little better condition to send you. If I don't, and you want the lot, just bid on it and you can have it for free. Dodgers Willie Davis) and last but not least a true "Tipton" 1961 Topps Phil Rizzuto MVP card!!!!!! THANKS Peter for the great surprise, there is nothing like the healing power of old cardboard and I really needed this!!!! I know, like me, many of you must have watched or listened to the Giants/Dodgers game last night and I am convinced it will go down as one of the greatest games played ever! If anyone has a tape of the game I would really appreciate getting a copy! Dem Bums played a great game and deserved the win! That doesn't mean I hate them any less despite the rumors of my disloyalty in Vegas this year! The excitement of Bonds breaking the home run record and proceeding to set a new record was incredible, the fact that he and Rich Aurilla became the most potent home run one two punch in the history of baseball surpassing the likes of Ruth/Gehrig, Mays/McCovey and Mantle/Maris was also exciting beyond my wildest dreams watching this great game! I had to leave in the third inning to go get Margaret at the airport however, I did hear Bond's second home run on the radio and got back in plenty of time to watch the lead for the Dodgers evaporate down to just one run. While I take by hat off to "Dem Bums" for a great game, they played as they should have, it doesn't mean I am not upset that they knocked my Giants out of the playoffs! Dem Bums can be assured that this fan realizes the rivalry is alive and well and all I can say is "Wait til next year"! Ideally, I would like something that has the same "look and feel" of the Tripplite iGuard (see the link below). http://www.lashen.com/vendors/Tripplite/SURGE/model/iguard.asp Rather than the small "square-like" iGuard, I'm looking for just a regular 4-6 outlet power strip that has this type of coloring (for various colors like red, blue, green, yellow,etc.). Bobby Balcena had 5 Seattle Rainiers cards, and the one Parkhurst card. That Parkhurst card is now on my most-wanted list. Bobby had a "cup of coffee" with Cincinnati in 1956. Been working with some variations and rare cards over the last month and found out some interesting things... The Joss only comes in two backs (it may come in more but have not yet seen them)...I own a hassan and the other i have seen it in is Polar bear...makes it tough... Most guides list the Cicotte with a small premium b/c of black sox participation...it should be higher, it is a rarer card. The sets themselves (at least the pictures) were printed in a different fashion than the T-206 sets in that they were printed on large pages. T-206s were printed with vertical strips containing the same players...t-205s were printed with most players appearing on one sheet (more like topps printing). You should see the two cards I own to make this assumption...arguably the two worst t-205s i have ever come across. The Moran with the stray line of type has finally found recognition as a rarity...i own 16 Morans without the line, one with it...By the way...the stray line of type is actually the last line of type for the A.A. Mattern Peter and I have long suspected that Tigers cards seem to be tougher than others to find. It turns out that it is slightly true...going back through the year and looking at wantlists, tigers seem to be slightly tougher than other teams except the highlanders (yanks) and the cubs. At one point, while Justice was batting, they made mention and/or showed a graphic where he is the all-time post-season leader in RBIs, games, or something. Here's my point: Does anyone else get pissed off at these announcers for making players like Justice out to be all-time greats because they are lucky enough to be playing at a time when the game has 3 rounds (!) of playoffs instead of just a World Series? Granted, the announcers did mention this fact, but they say it so off-handedly (and IMHO, not often enough given all the mentions and graphics of "All-Time Post-Season Leaders), that I wonder if the casual baseball viewer thinks David Justice ranks right up there with Mickey Mantle, Babe Ruth, et al? Does MLB keep track of post-season stats as a whole? Or do they break it down into DS, CS and WS? Remember Howard Cosell? A bunch of good ol' boys used to get together on Monday nights at their local gin mill to watch the football game. In the parking lot behind the gin mill, they would set up an old television set, tuned to the game. At the first appearance of Howard Cosell, one of them would blast the set to smithereens with a shotgun. Now that Howard Cosell is no longer with us (do you think all those shotgun blasts hastened his demise?), these boys do have sort of an empty void in their lives. Perhaps the Yankee telecasts, or possibly the appearance of some Yankee-loving announcers, could replace Howard in their hearts and in their parking lots. A local guy, Bob Worder, who coached my son in Little League two years ago, called last night and asked me if I wanted to go to the 5th game at Sayphcoe -- Mariners verse Tribe. This -- after watching the Ms return from a humiliating thrashing and apply the brakes to the Indians yesterday with a definitive 6-2 victory. This, after my stomach was tied in knots I didn't know it could tie. Yes, I said, ina rather calm voice, I would be delighted to go. Well, he said, you offerred me Mariner tickets earlier in the year, so I thought I would return thefavor. OK Bob, return all the ding dang diddly favors you want to -- you have just made my baseball season SOAR, right up there with 116 wins, Ichiro's debut, etc. etc. I know I promised to file a report after one of the last Oakland games thatI attended with my family. We lost that game and I had a nice time anyway, but I just didn't have any threads to develop into a report. Today shall be different. Today I will personally go to the bullpen area and observe John Rocker's warm-ups. I will personally try to give Bret Boone and David Bell vintage cards of their fathers for luck. I will tell Stan Javier to neverretire. I will tell Jay Buhner to get a coaching job with the Mariners. I will tell Lou Piniella, you are the man. In short, I shall be everywherebut my seat -- gatthering tidbits and news for my OBC brothers. Spike -- you should be here. All of you should be at Sayphcoe. Good luck to them....(this year only.) ================= To: Subject: Here's My Report Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 08:20:13 -0700 From: "Diamanti" Well Guys: Yesterday morning I dropped off the dog and headed to Bob's house to start the 2 hour trip to Sayphcoe. (Remember - I live 75 miles north of Seattle in podunk-ville, I mean Coupeville..) Our progress was slowed by large amounts of fog and the ferry we were on had to slow down because some nutcase was doing donuts in front of us. One of the ferry people got on the loudspeaker and, for all to hear, announced in a sarcastic voice: "Whoever the idiot is in front of us, you should have left your boat tied up to the dock this morning." Once safely off the ferry, Bob informed me that his 24 year old daughter Kim and her boyfriend Chad would be going to the game with us. Bob said Chad was a talker who had grown up deep in Northern Canada and had worked as a diamond-driller-troubleshooter, basically since he was 15. His daughter Kim works at Hooters. Have you ever tried to wipe a silly grin off your face as fast as possible? That was my challenge when Bob gave me this bit of news. And Bob is about 5'10" and easily goes 240, not much of thatfat. Bob grew up in the Chicago area rooting for the Cubs and could have flattened my ass pretty quickly had I not regained my composure! Once in thecar, Chad began talking and it was like going to one of those British movies where it takes you at least half the movie to understand half of the dialogue. Chad sounded like he was from Northern Ireland and Northern Englandrolled into one. But he was funny and Kim was lovely. I informed Bob that I would likely roam around during the game as our seatswere on the 300 level, and actually we were at the top row, but right behind home plate on the 3rd base side, which was an excellent vantage point. We got into the ballpark at 11:30 AM and I made a beeline for the dugout area. The Tribe were taking batting practice. I had a '58T Boone and a '60T Gus Bell in my pocket to give to either Brett Boone or David Bell if I couldget close enough to them. While standing there, I noticed the Latin American connection --Freddy Garcia, Joel Piniero, Juan Gonzalez, Roberto Alomar, and 7 or 8 other players from both teams congregated together. Wow, dire enemies once the game began, these guys really enjoyed hanging with each other pre-game. Carlos Guillen came out too and the crowd cheered for him..hewas coughing a bit though..goes with having TB, I guess...Mariners either took way early BP or skipped it altogether, 'cause the only Mariner who wasnear the dugout area was John Halama who signed some autographs. I asked him to give the cards to Boone or Bell and he suggested I do it myself. He was right, but I didn't see how I was going to do that, and never did, due to their not showing on the field. I got a hot pork sandwich and chips and made the long climb to the top of the stadium where I read the morning sports section from the paper until game time. Once the game began, I lost all desire to roam around -- I left my seat only once, to get a coffee. Most of the people in the stadium stood for 2/3 of the game. It was gut-wrenching! Mariners were pressing the whole game -- frequently getting men on only to have them left stranded. Moyer was a pitching-machine -- tirelessly working all areas of the plate. Rocker warmed up a few times but never came in. My ears had shut down after the second inning. It was so loud in the stadium I could FEEL the bass hum of theloudspeakers --everything else was just full bore white noise. The Ms looked poised, the Tribe looked bummed. Close to 4:30 PM it was over. I was exhausted, and hungry. We happily left the stadium and got on the freeway inshort order. Chad suggested we eat at Hooters. Hmmm, I COULD go for a burger.... Once seated at our table, I noticed the servers. They were NOT wearing thatsafety orange, but a tasteful black with orange lettering, with sayings like, 'Our servers are FLATTERY operated'. Since Kim worked there, ALL the girls had to come over and say hi and meet Kim's Dad, Bob, and his friend Mike. Hey, they said, would you two like autographed 2002 Hooter's Calendars?! YES we would, I beamed. So, I enjoyed my Hooters Burger, dropping fried onions in my crotch which I only noticed later, while watching the A's godown to the Yankees. Hooters has about 15 TVs, half of which were tuned to football and half to baseball. I had to keep looking in different directions to catch the baseball screens -- honest. The ride home was uneventfuland the day was a huge success, as you all can imagine... My standards are probably stricter than most, but I think with 1974 cards, which are kind of new old baseball cards, in order to cross one off your list you need to have the card number pretty much visible, or you need to be able to make out the player's name, or you need the player's face more or less recognizable. [This stuff is all in the manual, isn't it?] However, I also think you can make an exception for any card featuring Danny Cater on the Red Sox, and just cross it off anyway, because if you were to take a look at the 1974 Danny Cater card you might just wonder what the point of having that one in your collection is, plus, why do we really need to be reminded of him in the first place? I do not follow them, and I barely know what they are. I canceled my subscription to SCD years ago, because it was too full of this foolishness. How can a manufacturer dream up some new product, produce as many of it as he likes, attach some artificial inflated price to it because it is "rare" or a "collectible," and expect it to be worth that price? Of course, only dealers can sell it for that price. In 1931 she signed on to pitch for the Chattanooga Lookouts. On april 2nd of that year, she pitched an exhibition game against the new york yanks...being only 17 years old, she did manage to strike out two decent yanks players---ruth and gehrig...prompting Landis to ban women from baseball for nearly 6 decades!! 1st woman to own a team was Helene Britton who owned the st. louis cards from 1911 to 1917...not only keeping the cards competitive but turning a profit to 1st woman to actually come to bat in a major leauge game was Kitty Burke. Kitty spent most of the day heckling the batters and when cincy's Babe Herman came to bat in the eighth with the score 3-2 cards, she ran up to the plate grabbed the bat and took a stance. Daffy Dean, the cards pitcher, decided to throw her a pitch which she promptly ground to an infielder. I've finally sorted out cards lying around into a big Thom McAn shoebox. OBC rules apply-- If I gottem and you needum, you gettum. I've already plucked out packages that need to be sent out to a bunch of the boys. Here's the link: http://www.members.aol.com/chicod1/avail.htm In the "what ever happened to" catagory, can some of the vets fill me in on Jim Montgomery? Others may remember Bob Miller. Years ago, he sent me his entire Bob Miller collection. It is still in the package hoping that someday I can return it to him. I was trying to remember when I joined this illustrious group. I remember meeting UnkPhil on Prodigy (I know, some are asking, "what's that??"). Around that time I was VP of TIC while Bob was Pres. I know Mark Z remembers those days. Phil brought me over to the "creased side" of card collecting. I guess that was around 1994. I can't believe it's been so long. I still have a pic somewhere of us in Port Washington in '97, when Wayne finished my 69s, Jim bought some stuff that I still shake my head about, and we found a beautiful Morgan rookie for Tex. Now for the time I have missed.... Doc J, yes, fathers' day I'm always think about the Bunning game against the Mets. I was thinking about the card exchange (remember, it's not the other guy's list you try to fill, it's a card that means something to you with a story), I love Christmas morning reading about the cards. The 75 set is still my favorite moment in OBC, along with Monday nite flipping, and Guru's Civil War checklist. I was the one who traded 100 Fregosi's for a Ryan to Eric V, I'll bet he still has some around. Other names that I came across...Len124, KC70s, Mark (Chata, who taught us all Indian speak "Nan Aya"), BobBuhl... Amazing what this group has become in 10 years. I'm glad I've been able to come along for the ride. You new guys will hopefully have as many fulfilling experiences as I have. I sometimes wonder what happened to some of these folks and how they are doing. My OBC hat is proudly displayed along with my personalized bat (did we ever find out who sent those pieces of lumber?). Who'd a thought that a piece of cardboard could do all this? ("yes doctor, I feel better now, here's your $75.00"). If you got this far... Now go to the damn link and take my cards... PLEASE! PS I guess I put this in the right catagory :) ================= To: Subject: End of THE Season Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 06:24:02 -0700 From: "Diamanti" Well Guys: Gotta git the obit out of the way, 'cause I'm certainly not thankful for George Steinbrenner and his GM. It was Brad Pitt against the other guy (can never remember his name) in "Fight Club" last night in the Bronx. No matter what the Mariners tried, the Yankees countered and then some. The psychological/subconscious must play a huge role in baseball. Once the M's lost game 4 (that effing Bernie Williams, as my wife said so bitterly), no way could they begin to come back. They had chemistry, they had team, but they didn't have the muscle or enough pitching besides Moyer all the time, and Freddy Garcia some of the time. Who would have said the Yankees would come back in 5 games to beat Oakland?! (I know, SOME one in OBC land said it...somewhere). But they did. And theytook the first two from us in Sayphcoe after we had handled them so easilyand beat them in NY so many times during the regular season. (I know, the post-season is DIFFERENT -- oh really, same guys, same ball, same bats, no,it's just different...) Is it just a return cycle all the time? I know incribbage that I always break even - always 50%. But the Yankees go aroundthe odds, even though Lou Piniella said it well..."Yankee mystique? It's all in your head." Now for the carping....Best team money can buy......fans from another planet (like the guy reaching over the right field fence, almost hitting Ichiro's mitt on a long fly out as the Security guy tries to shove him back....) FOX TV's strange, poorly timed and totally uneven coverage. (Where's Yogi and Reggie throwing out the first balls? Oh, sorry, FOX decided to show a commercial during that unimportant, history-looking backwards event. .. what?!?! Costas and crew are annoying but at least they are TV professionals). But I will say this -- Goerge has lucked into great managing -- Joe Torre, Zim-Gerbil and Mel Stottlemyre are smart, savvy baseball men. Randy Johnson said he wanted to play the M's instead of the Yankees in the WS. Yeah, I know, they would have beaten us. But see, Randy LIKES the M's and it might have had some fun elements to it. Now I have to burn incense and doo Voodooso the Diamondbacks win 4 games (how many days rest does Curt need? One, maybe?) As I was cutting off my 3-day-old ticketmaster bracelet that was gonna get me playoff tickets to game six, I overhead my 14 year old, baseball-loving son say to my wife: "Mom, there are only two seasons, and one of them is the off-season." That says it all..... Do I just drag and drop jpg files onto it to create a card image cd, or is there something more technical? ================= Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 22:32:14 EDT Subject: Major OBC announcement To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: WMDpks@aol.com Some of you who regularly follow the listings in eBay Pre-1950's may have noticed a series of CD-ROMs being offered today by a good friend of mine, Mike Wheat. He had about eight or ten different CD's with an opening bid of 9.99, and each CD had several hundred images of baseball cards in various categories. The web site for his new business venture, www.baseballcardmuseum.com (if I remember correctly) offers each for sale for about $14 plus shipping costs (that happens to be the "Buy It Now" price in his eBay auctions). But to buy one each of the fifteen baseball-related CDs would cost a whopping $210 plus shipping, for about 6500 digital images. I can make you all a better offer: a single CD, called the 2001 "Baseball Card Images" project, containing nearly 14,000 images of baseball cards 1972 and earlier. It's still in the development stages, but the "infrastructure" is pretty solid: a single HTML file on the CD which navigates through twelve different categories (30s40sGum, AlbumCards, Bowman, Caramels, Fleer, FoodIssues, Miscellaneous, PlayingCards, 19th C. Tobacco, 20th C. Tobacco, Topps, and Zeenuts) which cover and display cards from over 250 different sets. No kidding. My asking price is the usual $0.00, with an additional $0.00 to cover postage and handling - please include 7.25% extra for New York State tax. Just let me know if you want one and I'll get one out to you as fast as I can burn them. (It would help if you sent me a quick email with your address.) Now just seems to be a good time to put out the first "release" of the collection, as I'm getting near the available storage capacity of a standard CD, and would love to hear any suggestions for improvement or constructive criticism. All I ask is that you refrain from reselling the CD, because many of the image files are used with permission from mega-dealers on eBay (including our own Andy Cook!) on the condition that I don't sell it. And the raw materials amount to about a quarter for a cheapo CD-RW, 20 cents for a plastic CD mailer case, and 80 cents first class postage. Most of you guys are worth at least a buck and a quarter to me. Some of you, anyway. There's gotta be a couple. But speak up and ask now, or send me a request any time in the near or distant future, and I'll get one on its way to you. As I said, Mike is a good friend of mine, having supplied me with several dozen of my precious 1940 Play Ball cards. He's very OBC-friendly, and I wish him well, but I honestly don't think he'll sell many CD's at $250 for an 18-CD set (15 baseball CDs and one each for basketball, football, and hockey). He's got awesome, incredible cards (Steve Rittenberg and I have bumped elbows like pigs at a trough at Mike Wheat's discount-vintage table in Ft. Washington). There's been another guy trying to sell several hundred 1910-era tobacco images on a single CD for an opening eBay bid of $9.99 just about every other day in the Pre-1950 category, but I don't think he's had much business at all. This CD of mine is yours for the asking, as long as you don't resell it. So, let me know if you're interested... A nice mention from Howie Rose (even if he didn't know OBC). Years ago I worked with his brother in retail. Seems Howie got the money and his brother got the looks (those are his words). On another front, some of you may know that Bobby Valentine is a company spokesman for my company (Manchester Technologies- www.e-manchester.com). He asked if I would mention to the group the Auction America auctions on Ebay. He has one hell of a collection that he has put up and is donating everthing to the Sept 11 charities. When I was in a mega-eBay phase, looking for dozens of postal money orders a week, he and I would play a game of what kind of different wisecrack he could come up with, and what kind of clever response I could make up on the spot. (For a couple of money orders under $15 each, he'd charge me five hundred and ninety five dollars, to which I'd reply "That's a bargain at half the price.") Harvey's not in much of a kidding mood lately, along with just about every other employee who handles mail. It would help if you see one of our postal brethren to give them a good word, as they've been supporting our organization's infrastructure for a long time and it's easy to take them for granted. All I could come up with was one of Dan Rather's corny news sign-off lines from several years ago, "Courage." Harvey looked at me, a little surprised, and quietly said "Thank you." CD's have been mailed out to everyone requesting them as of 5:00 PM Wednesday. Two more will go out today, and after I restock my supply of raw materials at the computer show Sunday, I'll send the remaining few out to Marshall West and Keith Summers. And if you haven't yet asked for one, what's-a-matter wit-choo? At the last computer show I bought 256MB of additional onboard RAM for my new IBM computer which came with only 64MB onboard. It was incredibly easy to install, and to me, seemed incredibly cheap ($21) to dramatically boost the performance of the machine. I've really been pushing it lately, since I found a copy of the Object REXX interpreter which allows me to write and run several programs that automatically organize all the card images in all the folders, creating the HTML set files and category files on the fly. I discovered a letter from Bob D'Angelo and the Geiger counter went off the scale. I was reassured upon opening it that it was only because of the glare from the cards themselves: A trio of cards featuring Ted Williams, Tony Gwynn, and Cool Papa Bell. Old names, but they were from a very recent set, so it was a good thing I had on my 35 sun block . THANKS BOB!! So now that I have gotten used to the new store and it's all filled up and ready to open, I get sent away for a couple weeks. This is when they bring in all the perishable stuff (dairy, meat, produce) and my services aren't needed until people actually start buying groceries and the shelves need to be refilled. This week I'm working in Peabody, MA and Tuesday night another coworker from my new store was also sent up there to help out. To make a long story short (and I know you all like to see that), I'm going back to the old store I was at before all this moving around happened. My store manager said he was gonna whine and complain like all the other store managers do when they lose their best help. It must've worked and I'm happy it did. Now I don't have to worry about not taking my vacation during opening week... Speaking of which, my trip has also taken a new turn. Mike Rich suggested checking out the big Toronto show Nov. 9-11. I should be able to take him up on his offer. This makes my 2001 tour schedule stops in the following cities (and hopefully in the following order): Atlantic City (11/2); Charlotte, NC (11/3); Atlanta, GA (11/4-11/7); Oak Park, MI (11/8); Toronto, Ontario (if they let me across the border 11/9-11/10) with a return to Everett on 11/11 or 11/12. Additional stops can still be added. I'm making this up as I go along, but that's what it looks like right now. Scheduled activities include a heavy dose of gambling in AC, a Patriots game complete with tailgate party in Atlanta, a possible OBC gathering and swap session TBD, and some serious bargain bin searching in Toronto (finances permitting - please refer to that first part about heavy gambling). As expected, a long boring trip report will be coming to a ramblings server near you in a couple weeks. This is fair warning. Hope to hear from you soon and/or see you in a couple weeks. The show was the first "Big One" to hit Vancouver in some 7 years. I had a bit of trepidation going in (not a lot of confidence.) I have to admit that it was a really good show, not a beanie baby in sight. Hockey was King Big Al made it...he is a real joy first thing in the morning. Just a thing to behold. He was wearing his OBC Vegas golf shirt, but there was no golf game, no ribfest, and the usual suspects were missing. Diamanti, on the other hand, simply moved in to Stately Rainsley Manor. This guy is just a nut case. Brought a present for his host, and had the nerve to make me guess what it was....he said it was 3 of my loves, but I wasn't allowed to include my wife, kid, or dog in my guess. Even the Customs guy asked him about it. Turns out it was a great advertising piece from 1953...it involved the stinky old cardboard it was made of, a 3D trout standing out from a great background, and a beer ad. Mike, you got them all! Ah yes, you ask, the show. I have to admit, it was wonderful. It sure cost me a few bucks, my TV's and '59's took a large pounding, and I even came away with U.S. cash in my pocket from an oddball Mantle that I sold. I'm sure Diamanti will have more to say about that. Tiger Dave was there, we managed to hook up over a brew after the show, and Dave was simply delighted meeting up with Al and Mike. Dave has nothing but good things to say about OBC. He really is our kind of guy. I was most disappointed that guys I was shopping for came up empty...Mike Rich...not a Coke cap in sight. Andy...no Etchebarren OPC's, but I did get a good lead on where to look for them now...and Dave Fallen..there wasn't one '52 Parkie there to be had...let alone Bobby Balcena...I tried. I tried for a few others, but hockey seemed to rule the world at this show for the most Well, back to the frozen food aisle...oops...that's Ken's line. Sometimes I feel like him. Sorry. ================= Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 02:19:55 -0500 From: Bob “The Once and Future King” is hopeful because “The candle will burn.” as Tom said. Tom was going to live. I was high bidder on a lot being sold by user name "hifiguys30@hotmail.com". They had a rating of like 16 so I thought I was OK. Well, suffice it to say, I was not OK. My check was cashed but I received nothing for two months. Her name is Shannon Calhoun, and she lives near Lexington Ohio. What I did was: Reported her to her local sherrif's department Filed a claim against her on eBay Contacted the fraud department of the FTC Contacted the Post Office about mail fraud ...and updated her every step of the way. Much to my surprise, this weekend I received my cards. I hadn't had any contact with her since she sent me the auction notice back in July. Persistance (and threats) pay off I guess. I have learned not to buy anything of any value from low-feedback hotmail (or other free) addresses where you can't pay by CC (and therefore get a charge-back if they fail to ship). The lot was for 6 T206s and 2 Obak cards. It turns out she UNDERGRADED at least two of the T206s (I'd call them EX, probably the nicest ones I own now). Now, since you've had the patience to read all that crap (or did you wisely skip ahead?) I now have another T206 double to send out. He is Congalton, condition, Tipton + (or would that be Tipton -?). Anyway, if you need him let me know and he will be out of the doubles box and off to you. God Bless. Easier to correct the mistakes(lies) about my behavior. But Mike is real late reporting in so here goes... I got up there early (for me) so I took my girls to a mall (Metrotown) scouted out card shops (only a UV hockey stand) and bought a magazine( computer). We then went looking for the motel, and like always it takes me longer than normal to find the place. Hey who needs directions with my keen senses. We find it and get in place in time to call Grant at the same time I said I would get there. He sets up something for Sunday morning and we relax and have dinner. Then in the middle of the night, (8 AM) Grant calls and says see me in 20 minutes. I roll out of bed, figure out the shower and head out the door just these two older men get off the elevator. One has a bulge in his pocket and the other is wearing handcuffs. I will let Mike tell you about that one. We hit a local cafe for "Brekkies" and discuss Canadian eating habits. Every table has a unmarked bottle, which they know is the 3rd condiment we call Catsup. They seem to think it is one serving so refills come from 55 gallon drums. We get our order, and before I put pepper on the eggs and reach for the steak knife, Mike is done eating. I am not sure he can beat Ken at volume but there's no one can match his speed. Grant and I try to finish so we won't hold Mike up. Mike does get up saying he's hitting the restroom and turns out he picked up the tab. Hard to get mad at a guy like that. Since the bill is paid, we leave and before we get to the van, Mike stopped at a bakery to pick up some Italian items for the wife. Grant and I were betting it would not make it home, but was food for the train trip. The show is a bit hard to find, (see above) but I get there and locate the guys again. They both have spent a lot of the money they brought with armloads of cards. I circle the shows snagging a couple things and laughing at the other things priced over book. It was a good show, too much hockey and no real OBC bins but good. I finally meet TigerDave and we arrange to meet at the pub. I have to pickup the girls from a different mall and then find the pub. This took longer than one would think but I did get there before Grant and Mike left (on the stairs going out the door does not count as left) and then I told Grant that he had an hour before he had to leave as he had not changed to PST yet. We stopped for one more and talked and said goodbyes. Good time as always when 2 or more OBC'ers get Tacoma Dome Show this weekend, more good times and Grant promised to Big Al in Seattle ================= To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com Subject: 1950 Strat-O- Matic Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 23:46:20 -0500 From: abaran@perriergroup.com Is anyone familiar with the 1950 Boston Braves Strat-O-Matic set? But what they demonstrate in brevity, I will counter with long-evity. Yep, this is gonna be a two-part-er, which goes against my Grant, I mean Grain, since I believe all good writers have an editor standing right behind them with a machete or rake or something. This WAS my first Canadianshow, and those good people deserve a full and fair reckoning of my impressions. It was actually Dave Fallen who gave me the idea to take the train, Amtrak's new Talgo cars, as an alternative to the excrutiatingly agonizing lines and wait at the border crossings. (How long were you there Al? 2 hours? Or was it REALLY closer to 3? My ENTIRE train trip took 2 1/2 hours...) I drovefrom Whidbey Island to Mt. Vernon (Washington STATE, not the dead president's home) and got on the train around 9 AM Saturday morning - which coincidentally was my birthday - can't think of a better present to myself than toattend an INTERNATIONAL card show, eye? The train was excellent, however, I chose to sit next to the door to the club car (they call it the Bistro Car now), and was treated to three young guys yelling and talking as if they expected everyone on the train to be deaf -- someone told me they were going up for a HOCKEY game. Great - drunk American hockey fans demonstrating our trans-border cooperation. At Blaine, WA, customs agents boarded the trainand quickly passed through - they were very polite, but had that serious, SWAT look to their accessories (vests, combat-style pants, yellow Block Letters, etc.) I was starting to detect a theme here - Hockey and Cops..... Grant was patiently waiting at the station and whisked me out to a sleek-looking, new white van with "CrimeStoppers" plastered all over it, plus various subtle yet noticeable-looking advertisements for 'London Drug', and GPS Wiretech or something. As Grant quickly voomed into traffic he said that, since my train was late, he had pulled a little surveillance. The drug-ees,er citizens, had been following him around until he came up behind them just as they said, "Where the bleep is he?!" to which he replied, "Who!". They jumped, he laughed. Canadian cat and mouse... We then made our way downtown to check out some card shops. Say, that's a nice looking empty curb there, Grant, why don't you take out your "Official Police Business" laminated sign, stick it on the dash, and we will go to the card shop? I was THINKING this, while Grant was DOING it...no baseball cards though, now for a quick tour of Stanley Park (which occupies a HUGE peninsula right downtown - overhead pictures show a backdrop of mountains dusted with snow, downtown buildings, and this enormous chunk of evergreen). Grant shows me the stable area, the horses are all inside and the building islocked, so we can't visit Pico (Grant's best partner, bar none), but Grantpoints to a shiny new green Ford Explorer, that runs on propane. "I got that vehicle for those ungrateful guys," he tells me. Seems a Ford Company executive was in Stanley Park one day and mentions that the company is thinking of donating a propane-powered vehicle for police use -- Grant arranges it....hmm..another theme - hockey, cops, donated vehicles. We check out one more card shop, another dud. Guy in the shop, watching hockey, tells us to go to the "Big One" card show this weekend. Thanks buddy, we're on it -- why don't you get some vintage cards in this sorry place? I was only thinking this, not saying it, mind you... Now it's back to Grant'shouse for cards but we have to stop at the mall for a few things that Grant's wife wanted us to pick up. Hmm, mall seems crowded, there's no parking...wait a minute...Grant spies another empty curb, it's yellow, but out comes the laminated sign, hey, we're parked! We're going into the mall to get our stuff! OK! Get to Grant's, he opens his gift from me (see, on my birthday, I GIVE people gifts! I've always been kind of backwards, or is that contrary?), a 1953Groh's cardboard beer advertisement with a brown trout cutout that comes out from the background, ala 1950s simulated 3-D. Grant is stunned and lovesit, now that he has figured out how it represents 3 of his loves -- trout fishing, beer drinking, old cardboard. I meet Grant's wonderful wife Jennie (what was she thinking?) and Grant starts dragging out the Canadian football, hockey, and finally, baseball. Followed by one of the best lasagna dinners I've ever had, prepared by Grant's semi-wheelchair bound wife, who is finally able to get out of the chair and stand for short periods of time, since her "accident". (Remember the island getaway, aka some horror movie like "I Know What You Did Last Summer", only for the Rainsleys it's always, "You Know You Will Suffer Some Stupid Fate When You Come to Savary Island.") Some of Grant's neighbors drop in (they bring their own drinks, Canadian custom) and entertain us with great stories. After they leave, Grant pulls out his 1978 Sports Illustrated Major League baseball game -- which is outstanding! I do AL, he does NL, I've got the Big Train pitching for me and he's got Bob Gibson. What a match-up. It's a shut-out until the 6th when I send Bob packing as my clutch batters put together enough singles and a stolen base to score us two runs, which was the final - Mike's AL team 2, Grant's NL losers, 0. We're off to bed now, reminding each other to set our clock's back one hour. I get the deluxe treatment -- the entire basement to myself with a beautiful TV and remote. But I'm too tired from all the Canadianexcitement, so it's lights out until the "Big One" tomorrow, when we will hook up with "Big Al". So when I play the Tigers vs Cards and everyone's ERA was less than 2, it makes for a low scoring game. I think they began in the early 60s. As with most of my stuff as a kid, I wrote on some of the cards as they were traded, otherewise they are worth a bunch, I found out. I ordered new cards about 4 years ago and now there is a lot of new options- you can play the basic version, which was all you could play in 69, or the advanced version where it takes into account righty vs lefty in batting; a starter's endurance factor after 7 innings, etc. Brad Chambers >From: "Chuck Paris" >Reply-To: "Chuck Paris" >To: >Subject: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: Stratomatic >Date: Tue, 30 Oct 2001 07:42:16 -0500 >My brother and I played Stratomatic in the early 70's and I believe at that >time you could order cards from earlier years, however my guess would be >that it started in the 60's or 70's and they produced older years at that >We had a great time playing the game for hours on end and I even got my Joe >Torre and Bernie Carbo cards autographed at Busch Stadium but alas lost >many moons ago. >Got a newer edition of the game for Christmas from the wifey in the late >80's .... In the early 70s, an advanced version was introduced, which featured, among other things, lefty-righty breakdowns. A super-advanced version, which includes ballpark effects, weather effects, and clutch hitting, was introduced in the mid 80s. Strat-o-Matic first began issuing past seasons (and re-issuing previously issued seasons in advanced and super-advanced form) around 1984. The first past season was 1956. The 1950 set that the original poster referred to was one of these past seasons, not an original 1950 I bought the board game in 1976, and switched to the computer version in the early 90s. The computer version retains the look-and-feel of the board game. In fact, it uses the same game engine as the board game, but everything is automated. It's nice for running season replays as it takes care of all stats, makes it easy to draft and trade players, etc. The best thing is that they haven't "sold out" and added a bunch of arcade-like features like most other games. The focus is and always has been on statistical realism, and they do it better than any other game I've seen. For the 40th anniversary, Strat-o-Matic issued a Hall of Fame set (and threw in Rose, Shoeless Joe, and Carl Mays to round out the set to 192 players). There's some interesting reading on their web site, in addition to on-line ordering, etc. Check it out! I've been playing it since 1968, have bought every year since, and eventually picked up all the old sets back to the original all-star set from 1961. Strat-o-Matic first began issuing past seasons (and re-issuing previously issued seasons in advanced and super-advanced form) around 1984. The first past season was 1956. It's fallen between the cracks with the big guidebooks to vintage cards- Lew Lipset never got around to writing it up, and Lemke does a terrible job with it in the Standard Catalog. I've decided to try to become an "expert" on these sets, polling collectors for info on the relative scarcity of backs, etc. So let me start with you guys. I know most of you don't collect this set, but I'm sure OBC does have some holdings, so I'd be grateful if you'd share with me, simply: 1. How many cards you have from these sets total - 2. The distribution of backs you have Here are the choices I'm aware of- if you have another back not listed here, give me a shout Blank back Altoona Tribune Block & Kuhl Famous & Barr Globe Clothing Indianapolis Brewing Sporting News Standard Biscuit Successful Farming Weil Baking These last three aren't even listed in the Standard Catalog but I've seen them recently on ebay: Ware Basement Green/ Joyce Morehouse Baking 3. Any other information you have on the set: impressions about scarcities, curiosities about individual cards (for example, I've seen 3 copies of the George Gibson card and they all have the same printing flaw that erases most of his first name), etc. When it's done I'll be happy to share the results of my poll with you. Thanks a bunch for your help! I have always thought that the OBC should be the "collector's equivalant" to SABR (without the politics) as well as a great group of traders, hobbiests and friends. I will be getting my few M101's out and checking them. We have a huge collective collection with some great scarce sets, and trying to catalog them somehow and add to the knowledge of the hobby is a part of what we should do. Now I wouldn't know a M101 from an M80 or an M16, but I have thought about trying to figure out the three back variations and their scarity of R423s, and would count on whoever from OBC has some to gather data if I ever get around to it. So much for keeping my mouth shut, huh Mark! ------------------ Reply Separator -------------------- Originally From: t206guy@aol.com Subject: Re: [OBC-Ramblings] Re: M101 Sporting News cataloging info Date: 10/30/2001 10:31pm Greetings all I am a keep my trap shut kind of guy for the most part. My brother and I played Stratomatic in the early 70's and I believe at that time you could order cards from earlier years, however my guess would be that it started in the 60's or 70's and they produced older years at that We had a great time playing the game for hours on end and I even got my Joe Torre and Bernie Carbo cards autographed at Busch Stadium but alas lost them many moons ago. Got a newer edition of the game for Christmas from the wifey in the late 80's .... I should really pull it out again one of these days. ================= Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 09:10:46 EST Subject: announcement To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com From: HMorgan707@aol.com The NFL announced today that for financial reasons, they had to eliminate one team from the league. I have the option to renew for one month or more. I don't think I will be doing that since I have also been asked to work a security detail (my job is research and targeting) for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City Utah which will be close to a month starting late January or early February. I will post my hotel address and phone number(s) this weekend. I hope to have AOL but if I don't and you need to get in touch use my business email address: I hope to be in Mertyl Beach South Carolina Thanksgiving weekend for a family reunion otherwise I will probably have weekends off. Let me know if we can get together. Now, I do not intend to misuse "Ramblings" with a political statement however, despite your political views I hope all of you got to see the World Series last night. Besides the wonderful game, I knew it was over for the D'Backs as soon as Roger ripped the catchers mitt apart with "Mr. Splity" perhaps it was over before that. But my favorite moment as a federal law enforcement officer was when George W. Bush threw out the first pitch (A perfect strike)! Not only did he walk to the mound UN escorted, no security in site, no secret service as a matter of fact no visible protection of any kind! And then he proceeded to watch the game form the dugout and even when asked if he wanted a hat he refused it. Perhaps he wanted the highest visibility and he did a wonderful job getting it. I think his message was very clear, go on with your life's and enjoy the finer things such as baseball! In my opinion he succeeded and I salute him!
