================= Date: Tue, 17 May 2011 02:24:44 -0700 (PDT) To: OBC-announcements@yahoogroups.com From: Glenn Codere Subject: Using the OBC Thanks Server - your views wanted! As you all know, the offering of Thanksfor cards received is one of the key principles. It lets everyone in the group know who is active, and encourages OBC attitude of "What Goes Round Comes Round". A few years back, as our group expanded and collecting habits evolved, the OBC UV Server was created in order to allow members to discuss the newer cards and sets that they collect. At present, OBCers are advised to use the Thanks server only for vintage cards, and the UV server for UV/newer cardassociated thank yous. The reasoning behind this is to retain a true distinction towards our primary interest of dealing old material (we are, after all, "Old Baseball Cards"). It does, however, result in virtual duplication of messages across servers, and fairly unnecessary statements and tags such as "to be mentioned elsewhere" or "other items which will describe in another place". There can be no doubt that many members collect and move modern cards among each other, often in the same envelope or packageas older cards. The AC feel that it may be time to revisit the way we offer thanks, and would like your views on this by way of a poll. The AC are currently considering 3 different proposals for offeringThanks. 1)Status Quo - Thanks guidelines remain as they are 2) A single thank you on the most appropriate server as determined by the memberoffering - If a member receives a "mixed" package, they need only send one thank you, directing it to whichever server they feel is the most appropriate based on the balance of cards received. 3) A single, open Thanks server- encompassing the ability to offer thanks both vintage AND "UV-only" packages, while retaining the UV server for UV discussion and fuller detail on UV packages received - Members will offer ALL thank yous via the Thanks server, including basic acknowledgements of UV-only packages. However, a more detailed description of a UV-only package can also offered to the UV server should you wish. A fourth option - None Of The Above - will also be available should you feel that something completely different is appropriate. The poll will allow for multiple selection, so if you feel you can work with, say, either selection 2 or 3, you can select both. Voter identity will be withheld. The poll will run for 2 weeks, finishing on Tuesday, May 31. In addition to the poll, the AC would welcome your thoughts and opinions onthis matter. Please direct any messages to me (glenncodere@yahoo.com). Just to be clear,THIS IS NOT A STRAIGHTFORWARD VOTE ON A SINGLE METHOD. The results of this poll will be used by the AC in conjunction with any additional feedback we receive from membersto inform how we move forward with this. The may choose to adapt or modify these proposals in line with member's opinionand any suggestions received. Does this sound like a lot of rules and guidelines just for a simple "Thank You"? Yes, it does. However, our group is much bigger than it was last timethis topic was broached and we are looking to expand even more. How we offer Thanks is a topic of major concern to many members, as those of us who were aroundwhen the UV server was being developed can certainly testify! It's not easy finding method that retains the onus on vintage cards, while at the same time offering members the full picture of activity within the group. We hope we can come up with something that moves towards satisfying this demand. The poll is up and running at the OBC Thanks Yahoo!Groups page.
