(finally) Hi all, After getting the mail today, almost all the lots have been paid for and shipped (except for three V05 baseballs, which will be mailed separately). I'm only waiting for payment on a single UV football card ...and trying to figure out whether or not Sal is a deadbeat bidder ;-) As it stands now, the total raised comes to: $2909.04 with most of the money coming in through Paypal. I think everyone deserves a round of applause on that one. Ebay fees totalled $165.50 for 100 or so lots (with the dutch auctions). A couple auction notes: The winner of the American Caramel card of Fred Tenney was named Carroll Tenney... I didn't ask. The winner of the lot of 33 Rob Deer cards requested insurance, bringing the total for the lot to $7.80 - or about $7.79 more than I thought I was going to get for it. I'm going to leave feedback for everyone over the next few days... if I can think of enough clever things to say ;-) TAYL, Ken M ================= To: Date: Sat, 27 Aug 2005 06:53:15 +0100 From: "geno.wagner" Subject: August Report OBCers -- It's been nice to see the cardboard flying in the last month! I think the AC's reminder about posting wantlists may have had something to do with it, so keep those lists up to date and posted on the wantlist server once a month. As far as new business, it looks like we have three new members to 1) Vote on T.J. Valacak (Passed 7-0) 2) Vote on Tom Massimo (Passed 7-0) 3) Vote on Walker Guthrie (Passed 7-0) 4) Vote to send a short blurb to the group about the importance of being a sponsor/mentor for new members (Passed 7-0) Joe, Wayne, Geordie, and Mark - can you guys make sure the new guys get started on the right track? Their emails are in the CC Block. They each need a mentor - Peter chose one for each new member as shown below. If someone doesn't want to mentor, please let me know: Valacak: Chris Stufflestreet Massimo: Mark Holland Guthrie: John Leroux I'll send the mentor message in a separate email. Have a great month!! The answer is the people who make up OBC. The key to OBC's long term success is to continue adding people into the Family (we really are more a family than a trading card group) who understand and appreciate the principles that make up OBC The AC would like to remind all members of how they can help with this The first is by being a sponsor to a prospective new member. If a prospective new member asks you to sponsor them as an applicant to OBC, there are two questions you should consider; 1. Is OBC the right group for this person? 2. Is this person right for OBC? When asked to be a sponsor you should try and explain what OBC is to the prospective member. While everyone may describe OBC differently and that's fine; there are some key points to what makes OBC special that the new applicant should understand. Let them know that we deal primarily in older cards, mostly in off condition. Most times we just send cards out to whoever might need that card. This doesn't mean that there aren't some pre arranged trades, especially for more expensive cards, but the primary focus of the group is based on the concept of "what goes around comes around". Try describing RAOK and how some of our most cherished memories involve things like the John Ball or Rick Redpath auctions or trying to do little things to help a member out when they are feeling down. When a person joins the group you may be asked to be his mentor. If you are to be a mentor, then for the person's first year in the group you should make an extra effort to keep in touch with that person and answer any questions they may have and provide general guidance. Also keep an eye on that person's postings to the various servers. If they are asking for or offering UV cards or offering a group of 1978 commons up for trade, hoping to receive equal value (based on Beckett) in return, you should give them a gentle reminder that those posts don't really belong in OBC. By all working together to help new members assimilate into OBC and truly understanding the OBC spirit we make OBC a better group for years to come. Take Care, OBCAC
