================= Date: Sun, 10 Feb 2002 17:21:50 EST Subject: Campaign 2002 to begin shortly To: OBC-Ramblings@yahoogroups.com, OBC-Announcements@yahoogroups.com From: WMDpks@aol.com Hard to believe that almost a full year has gone by, and as the outgoing chairman of OBCAC (Old Baseball Cards Advisory Committee), I'd like to share a few thoughts about the group - mostly positive. Before I do that, I need to announce that the terms of the active OBC Advisory Committee end on Feb. 27 (for some reason, the by-laws don't seem to address who is in charge on Feb. 28, as the new terms begin on March 1). Right now, we're soliciting nominations for positions on the 2002 board, and will hold an election in a week or two. We're looking for "a few good men" - or women - to be exact, we need seven voting members and one non-voting facilitator/chairman position. Current members include your humble narrator (me) as the chairman, along with Trader Doug Smith, John "Bama" Harrell, Geno Wagner, Peter Iverson, Dave Kolenda, Lorin Anderson, Bob D'Angelo, with Dangerous Dan Austin serving as OBC Webmaster. This was a terrific group to work with, and I'm hoping that they will consider continuing on the committee for 2002. Please give some careful thought to who you'd like to nominate, and if you're nominated, please consider serving on the committee. If you've appreciated being a member of OBC for more than three years; if you're "plugged in" to what's going on in the organization; if you have some constructive opinions on which way the group should go; or if you just want to roll up your sleeves and help, now's the time to step forward and volunteer. Dr. John Harrell (Bama) will be in charge of collecting nominations and counting the votes (he's going to step down from his active voting position on the OBCAC this year, so there's no conflict of interest) so now's the time to speak up and serve your There has been a lot going on over the past year, some of which has added a few years on to my actual age (44), added a few gray hairs to my head (luckily, I'm quite bald), and cost me a few friendships along the way, but on balance, it's been one of the best years for OBC in its history. I'm always impressed with the amount of traffic on the OBC-Thanks and OBC-Ramblings email servers - each one of those notes reflects yet another instance of friendship and unselfishness that is the true trademark of our organization. Also, I'm constantly amazed by the scholarship and knowledge of vintage baseball cards by some of the resident experts. Of course, the best thing of all is the opportunity to meet up at card shows, putting faces to the email names, and diving into bargain bins shoulder-to-shoulder like pigs at a slop trough. (Sorry.) I'm very proud of this group, and am looking forward to spending more time with my hobby as I step down from the OBCAC Chairman position. That will give me time to send out more cards than I was able to do last year, more time to work on my BBC Images CD (actually, it's now "CDs" as the nearly 18,000 images is just about at the full capacity of the CD-RW's I've been using), and time to start this year's project, taking over for Dan Austin as OBC Webmaster with Steve Rittenberg's help. Thanks, everyone, for everything, and do your OBC group a favor and either nominate someone for OBCAC, or get someone to nominate you. NOW. Wayne M. To: OBC-Announcements@yahoogroups.com From: WMDpks@aol.com Or at least I think I'll like them, as soon as the set gets delivered from the eBay auction I won. Current players on cards in the style of 1948 Bowmans, plus an insert set of 13 different reprinted 1948 Bowman cards. As excited as I am about them, the OBC-Ramblings and OBC-Wantlist groups really aren't appropriate places to discuss anything post-1980, even if they're related to pre-1980 cards or card styles, so I'd like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the OBC Advisory Committee, to remind everyone to kindly refrain from those discussions on the main email servers. I'm told there are alternate mailing lists and web sites that handle the most recent cutting-edge stuff, so let's all play by the rules, 'k? Buh-bye. I don't know how that stacks up with past years but it would be nice to get at least 50% participation.
