================= Date: Sat, 12 Jan 2002 12:39:35 -0500 To: obc-announcements@yahoogroups.com Subject: The Death of a Wantlist From: Dan Austin Just a reminder to all the users of the OBC server to host your wantlist... ALWAYS keep a local copy of your wantlist on your machine at home. DO NOT rely on the OBC server for your only copy, or you may find that when the "wrath of the PERL script" hits, that your list may be lost and gone forever. In general, when your wantlist fails, I am going to reestablish a new one from scratch for you, so I will rely on your ability to cut and paste from a local copy into the server version. Of course, its always better to NOT use the OBC server if possible for your wantlist, but some other (more reliable) web service. If you do use the server, expect periodic problems due to this server bug. I hope to try and tackle to debugging of this script later in the year, but since I did not write it, it will not be a trivial task. If anyone here is a PERL guru and would like to tackle the job, LMK. As a side note, for those of you seeking old wantlists on the web (or even old copies of other websites), it is sometimes possible to dig up files from the internet that no longer exist. How? ASAP! From: Dan Austin Well, the time has come... The time for me to step down from this exciting and painful job they call Webmaster. I'll being going into a bit of a "card hibernation" mode for a while in an attempt to re-create some free time to spend with my family. Cards and web design stuff are just taking way too much of my time right now, and I'm looking for a break. A BIG break. I'll try and tie up some loose ends before I pass the torch. Speaking of passing the torch...who is ready to take on this challenging job? As of today, you can consider me "officially" resigned, so if you'd like the job, please contact the OBCAC ASAP! I'll continue in a lessening role as needed to help make the transition smoother. Dan Austin - dan@iamdanaustin.com Visit me at http://iamdanaustin.com "How far that little candle throws his beams! This is the offline directory that we maintain with all of the addresses, phone numbers, etc. for the group. This is a relatively easy, but very important job. Again, please contact the OBCAC ASAP if you would like to volunteer for this important mission! It would be great if the webmaster volunteer wanted to take this on as well (as it makes changes easier to coordinate), but this can easily be done by a second person. If you have any changes to your directory info, like change of address, phone, e-mail, wantlist location, etc., please let Grant know. As a reminder, changes in e-mail, wantlist URL should also be sent to the webmaster for changes on the website (still me for the moment -- help!) An e-mail should be sent to webmaster@oldbaseball.com to insure it gets to the right person as people in charge of various tasks sometimes shift. ...and e-mail changes that need to get updated in the Yahoo! groups mailing lists should be sent to the Yahoo! groups manager. Send e-mail to yahoogroups@oldbaseball.com. Mark Talbot is currently doing this, but you should use the above e-mail address, as people can change. All current OBC contacts can be located on the OBC contacts page: http://www.oldbaseball.com/contacts.html Dan Austin - dan@iamdanaustin.com Visit me at http://iamdanaustin.com "How far that little candle throws his beams! Start off with the neat assortment of old stamps on the envelope -- a 1957 Alexander Hamilton stamp, a 1946 Tennessee stamp commemorating 150 years of statehood, a 1957 stamp honoring the teachers of America, a 1950 stamp honoring the 150th anniversary of Washington, D.C.; and a 1958 stamp honoring the home of George Mason. Did I mention that she also sent cards? Linda found these for 25 cents apiece at a bookstore near her home. I am totally green with envy. She sends a 1955 Ray Jablonski, a 54 Bowman Jim Busby, a 54 Topps Paul Smith and a 58 Bob Nieman. Plus a few other goodies, including a Babe Ruth Classic set card, a pencil drawing of Ruth Etting, some UV stuff (of vintage players though), and one card of Tampa native Luis Gonzalez. Great stuff, Linda.
